It's pretty obvious that it needs to be reformed and better sooner than later.

Well, since it is my own thread.. :)

Obstructionism is in the eye of the beholder. Bush has put forward the idea of privatizing SS. In other countries where it was tried, it has failed miserably. SS needs to be dealt with for sure, and ought to be, however they do not believe it should be done that way.

It's like getting pregnant, you are or you aren't. You have money going into private investments or not.

Certainly something can be worked out, but this administration's idea of compromise generally consists of "Do what we tell you". Republicans hold power now, and if possible want to kill the Democratic Party. They won't allow Dems to get any credit, and the Dems can hardly afford to let this one go.

Sad state of politics.

Watch it on C-Span if it's on tonight.

Bush really shines in these forums. He comes across as really funny and very likeable.

the only bush speech i saw on there was the stem cell one. by the way, he had a perfect opportunity to make a joke about the baby that cried as soon as he mentioned stem cells being potential humans, etc etc and i was really surprised he didnt comment. its the sort of thing he is usually very comfortable with in the small group like that. perhaps the audience was larger than i could tell on the screen. or maybe he was just trying to do a very serious tone.
regardless, i watched the speech go by twice on c-span and figured id been watching too long if i saw the same speech twice in one day. but no SS one. didnt notice where the speech was. maybe he changed the subject because of the vote today.

The Bush plan allows workers to invest A THIRD of their payroll taxes in a private account.

I don't get the whole concept of Social Security. What right does the gov't have to take MY money to provide for MY retirement?

I'm perfectly capable of saving for my retirement myself and investing the money as I see fit.

Famous last words.

That's the problem.

What's the problem?

I'm actually a conservative investor (except for a small portion of my portfolio that I invest aggresively), but isn't it my right to be reckless with MY money if I chose to be?

Isn't it my right to comit suicide if I choose to? The bottom line is that people are just too stupid. The government has to protect the country against that stupidity, to avoid a situation where a disproportionate percentage of the population is destitute.

Is it their resonsibility? I'm not sure. I'm sure glad they're doing it though. I don't want a destitute bunch of rednecks starting a mercenary army and rampaging through the land, murdering, raping and pillaging the next time our country is in dire straights. By the way, you sidestepped his point. Why don't you address it?

Exactly right. No way in hell I'm going to discuss SS with the liars running this country. We'll all end up like the Enron employes.
