Ha! And just like that the Windows Explorer search function breaks!

All I did was add my whole drive to the index (I need the insta-search), and it worked beautifully and suddenly stopped. Now the search says no matches found no matter what I type in. How the hell do I fix that? 😵

Too bad, Windows search is fundamentally borked and will always miss results.

Is there some particular reason it needs to be within explorer?

Convenient to use while already using explorer for other stuff (browsing folders, etc). 🙂

Wow, wanna hear something strange? I tried the Everything app, but it's having the same exact problem as explorer - no searches on my drive B work. Drive B is an 180gb ssd with Win 7 and all my software, and then I have 2 other drives for mass storage. The indexing on them works perfectly on both explorer and everything. What happened to my B drive? 😵

1. that's an . . . unusual . . . choice for a drive letter (A and B are historically reserved for floppy drives, so I would avoid them if possible)
2. is it an ntfs volume?
3. in Everything, go to options and the Volumes tab and see if 'Check media' is enabled for that drive
4. Check the Exclude tab to make sure there isn't anything unexpected in it

Yea, he might want to save it just in case he decides he really wants to install that 5.25" floppy drive.

noo . . . but since it's an usual choice, some programmers might not account for it, leading to 'unexpected results' in certain situations

there's always a price to be paid for being 'unique'

It seems like everything Microsoft's tried to do to improve their search over WinXP's original Search Companion has just sucked horribly.

Why I moved to Everything, it's what search should have been

instant search, live updates, no horrendous disk thrashing to 'index', ACTUALLY WORKS

Why would you index a SSD? You could read through the directory on that drive in a couple of seconds anyway.

Ok, I got Everything to work. It's a really nice product, but I really wanna be able to just use the Windows Explorer search bar so that I don't have to open a new app. Is there any way to integrate Everything into that search bar? And is there any way to fix my windows search - why the hell isn't it working? It works fine on my C drive (a normal HD), but not on my B (the SSD).

I use agent ransack. It's one of those programs I install on every new windows installation.
