What is this virus? My friend said it is supposed to hit the US soon and Bush has covered it up but millions are gonna die.

well you and your friend are morons.

/thread

Theres already about a hundred people dead. 200 some got it, fatality rate is about 50% No one in the US yet, but they say it is only time. Big difference between this and normal "bird flue" is that they have a confirmed case of it being transfered bird to human to human. No other bird flue has done that, and has just been bird to human.

I would post links, but heard it on the radio, so no links.

Your facts are incorrect. The outbreak in 1918 started in birds.

Thats exactly the point. It normally doesn't do that, but when it did in 1918 it was bad. Ok, so I said no other bird flue has done that. I meant no other NORMAL bird flue has done that.

It will come eventually, and the reason people need to be prepared is that due to today's ability to travel (compared to what existed in 1918), it will spread a lot faster. It might not be so bad that there's a 50% mortality rate, but even a 10% rate will horrify people.

It's been so long since there was a serious pandemic, people are going to have a hard time coping.

I had to go in for my yearly physical yesterday and while there the doc and I were talking about the "bird flu." He was telling me that after it started being mentioned in the press his office began getting flooded with calls daily from people requesting a prescription for Tamiflu. Said he gets around 75 calls a day about it from patients and non patients.

So, it looks like the panic among the general populace has already started.

The world is overpopulated so I guess this is just another one of Mother Nature's ways of thinning the heard. I guess when/if it becomes a problem it will actually be beneficial to be someone who sits in their house behind a computer all day with no life or contact with real people......I guess most here will be OK.

QFT

It's called Darwinism people.

It will kill everyone or it won't. Who cares?

F'n media is creating a panic already...stupid morons.

Way ahead of you.

This is pretty nuts, because back in May, I asked one of my econ profs for some investment advice, and he said to buy into companies that manufacture vaccines for the bird flu in Asia. And lo and behold, here we are...

Too bad I don't have money to invest. It would then be easy to make a profit from Fear Uncertainty and Doubt.

Oh, and if an "Army of the Twelve Monkeys" level epidemic actually occurs, just stay home for a month and you'll probably be fine. Spend the time working on your resume and filling out job applications. The key to a really dangerous disease is a long contageous incubation period to help it spread. Stockpiling a months worth of refried beans, mac and cheese, and flour isn't much different from normal grocery shopping.

avian flu is nothing new. while some will succumb, i find it hard to fathom that 1-1.5 million people may die in the US. thats just fear mongering.
