H5N1 avian influenza? kILL MILLIONS?

What is this virus? My friend said it is supposed to hit the US soon and Bush has covered it up but millions are gonna die.

It's a flu virus for birds, but it can mutate and infect humans. H5N1 stands for the type of hemagglutinin (sp?) protein it has, which the virus uses as an entry point into the cell. Cases of avian flu's becoming infectious in humans has happened before, the worst in 1918 when ~50million people world wide died. There have been other outbreaks too, notably one in the 1970's called the Spanish flu (I'm not sure if it originated from Spain however). The thing to note is that an infectious strain doesn't have to be H5N1, this is just what has been bad in the past. Most scientists and experts in the field are firm believers in not "if" this virus will come, but rather, "when."

in an interesting side note they evidently have found two commercially available drugs that seem to counteract the effects of the bird flu if administered within 48 hrs of infection.

Yes, been hearing a lot about this. Sounds bad, but I think its just third world countries that will be screwed by it

Theres already about a hundred people dead. 200 some got it, fatality rate is about 50% No one in the US yet, but they say it is only time. Big difference between this and normal "bird flue" is that they have a confirmed case of it being transfered bird to human to human. No other bird flue has done that, and has just been bird to human.

I would post links, but heard it on the radio, so no links.

Avian flu, SARS, anthrax, small pox, suicide bombers, chemical and nuclear terrorism, CAT 5 hurricanes, mega-tsunamis, supervolcanoes, asteroids... Basically the government wants us to be scared of just about everything.

Your facts are incorrect. The outbreak in 1918 started in birds.

It sounds like another Y2K-class "tragedy" is at the doorstep.
It will probably never reach urban areas in the modern world, so there will not be millions of victims.

Works great for the votes, just look at last November.

the only factual and reasonable post in this thread

what is wrong with you people? everything is a conspiracy right?

avian influenza is a real threat. why do you think the world heath organization published an 18 page report titled 'Responding to the avian influenza pandemic threat. Recommended strategic actions' within the past 2 weeks?

reality check

as whaspe said earlier: "Most scientists and experts in the field are firm believers in not "if" this virus will come, but rather, "when."

the united states is at much less risk then many undeveloped nations but who cares. a pandemic is a pandemic and a human life is a human life.

I'm curious as to where you heard this, the only things I've seen where initial reports of resistance to tamiflu, which turned out to be based on old data. I haven't seen anything about other drugs as of yet - post any links you have, I'm rather curious.

Thanks

genomed claims they have a solution

also from this article:

"Finally, the antiviral drugs stockpiled by the US, oseltamivir (Tamiflu, made by Roche) and zanimivir (Relenza, made by Glaxo-Smith-Kline), have mild activity against regular influenza but no proven activity against avian influenza in humans."

The world is overpopulated so I guess this is just another one of Mother Nature's ways of thinning the heard. I guess when/if it becomes a problem it will actually be beneficial to be someone who sits in their house behind a computer all day with no life or contact with real people......I guess most here will be OK.
