H2O Question - Radiator location: TJ09 Case

After a lot of debate I've come to grips that W/C is the way to go and I'm ready to take the plunge.... now with that out of the way.

I recently got a Silverstone TJ09

I'm thinking of getting this kit:
Swiftech H2O-220 Apex Ultra

The main question here is not about whether this is a good kit. I think from what I've read it's a good choice.

The main thing I'm wondering is can I mount that radiator in the area on top of the case under the grill on the TJ09.... if I understand correctly they actually intended for people to use this extra area for something like this.

Any feedback advice is appreciated.

EDIT: After further research I found in order to get dual rads mounted inside the case I'd need to get 2 seperate 120mm fan rads instead of the dualrad.

im failing to understand what your asking.

Dont get that swiftech kit if its going on your C2D.

Also i would recomend you picking up a swiftech micro reservior as well when you check out.

The pump on the second kit i linked you to is much better then swiftech's 655. Not to mention the dtek fusion is better then the Apogee by a big margin. You are aware that in both kits you have the option of mounting the radiator outside.

Also consult my thread on newbies guide to water cooling. You should read about coolant tubing and other factors b4 you go out and purchase a kit.

As for your main question, is the top of that case a 120x2? if it is, then yes you can most definitely fit a radiator there. I dont see how you should have a problem since the PSU is bottom mounted and the top has vents. Just make sure yor use proper screws to secure the radiator up top. And dont screw it in too tight or you risk puncturing the rad.

Other then that, your going to run into some space problems. I hope your wire management skills are fairly good.

This baby cames with a 240 x 120mm wire-mesh that is removable for you to mount on your radiators which will function with good air pathways courtesy of the wire-mesh.


so yeah you can top mount the rad. Make sure you secure it well tho!

Thank you very much aigomorla I have started reading that thread and will save it off as a favorite.

I skimmed through it in the past but wasn't really sure if I was going to W/C or not... I'm pretty stoked about it now. I have a TJ09 with no side window so I'm going to order a replacement from www.sundialmicro.com which has one.

About mounting the radiator on top... there is about 4" of room left over above the MB inside the case... there are mounts (plastic clip mounts) for 2 120mm fans... my question to you (and I heard of a major player doing this but can't find the writeup... only seen reference to it on another site) is could I get 2 120mm black ice style rads and clip the fan portion of the rad into those clips and thus run 2 of them in series?

The only problem I've seen so far is that the barbs are always pointing in the direction that the fan is mounted on so if I did this the barbs would be pointing at the top of the case instead of down.... can the fans be mounted to either side of a rad??? Also are these rads too heavy for hanging them that way?? Just wondering if that is an option. The case has so much room inside that I really want to incorporate that space and make this a very clean install.

I looked over that kit and it looks like a nice kit, (I'll prob get that setup) however it uses a dual 120mm rad... not too sure I can mount a solid dual rad on top on the inside, the latter part is very important to me. The top of the TJ09 has 2 fan clips for 120mm fans however they are seperated by about 1-2" and there is a metal seperator support thing inbetween them. I'm thinking I need to go with 2 single 120mm rads in series to make this a good stealth install.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

120x2 > (120x1 x 2)
120x3 > 120 x 2 + 120 x 1 or 120x3

Stick with a single radiator, and dont jump dual until you understand the full concept on watercooling and loop order.

That picture uses a single 120x2 radiator top mounted like i suggested. I advise you try to do something simular.

HW LABS Black Ice <--- total crap of a radiator.

Get a swiftech QP series, which is ranked 2 according to Marci's performance thread.

However that link i gave you on my top post comes with a QP and a DDC-2 which are much better options then swiftech's Apex kit, and a DD kit.

Not to mention the D-Tek Fusion OWNS!

Sold! Yeah after seeing those pics (I looked hard for some but for some reason haven't seen many TJ09 w/c pics) I knew this was a slam dunk.

Yeah I'm going to get that kit you mentioned.

EDIT: One more question... I noticed no resovior in the kit? Any suggestions there?

EK res looks cooler.

However Swiftech's micro is easier to work with.


I highly recomend adding a reservior. It will make your bleeding life a lot easier.

I wasn't familiar yet with the model names yet but I was leaning towards the tube reservoir you have there at Petratech.

The boxy thing you see on the swiftech kit: Swiftech Micro Reservior.


The EK reservior is kinda big, so make sure you have some room to mount it.
