H1N1.....there will be no accurate numbers?

why is that a test has not been made so there is actual data for the H1N1 flu vs the reg flu can be accounted for? w/ the amount of people that die from the regular flu, why is H1N1 such an issue when the the cdc/docs don't even test to see which strain it is?

or is all this fear mongering and the media/gov trying to scare the general public? why the desire for the gov to try to vaccinate against something they dont even keep accurate numbers on?

can someone explain the rationality w/ this lack of data collection?

You don't need to test every individual, you can get accurate data with samples.

The government wants people to be vaccinated in case it turns out to be bad, because vaccinating people after they all start dying is less effective. It seems like it won't be as bad as it was once thought to be, but caution is warranted.

i was under the impression they were not taking samples, just if you have the "flu" during these times, the it is H1N1. are the hospitals/medical facilities testing?

CDC doesnt want H1N1 counts... only death tallies.
thats why they discontinued reporting...

but the deaths could be from many factors, or once somebody dies do they test them then?

death certificates generally require an autopsy... which determine the *cause of death*

H1N1 is relatively new. people born after ~1954 or so have never been exposed to the strain, and therefore have no immunity. To try and argue that the mortality is nowhere near as bad as "regular" flu, and therefore nothing to be concerned about, is ignorant at best, drooling stupiditity at its worst.

Here's a suggestion: listen to the physicians and health care professionals before you listen to agenda-driven, paranoia-inducing fathead media retards. Why, on earth, someone would dean to trust the word of a media news guy over an actual medical professional is.."beyond the pale." It's saddening, really, that our society has fallen to this level of stupidity, and it is so rampant.

but, "Oh my God! they're in it for the profits! Of course they want you to vaccinate!!"

.....YOU HAVE TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME.

H1N1 doesn't have a significantly greater mortality risk than any other usual flu strain

My prof. who was a chair of major research center(also a senior scholar of many epidemiology and health service planning centers) is worried how this H1N1 is blown out of porportion and vast amount of resources are put into this flu. As a person who spent most of his life on this kind of subject, he claimed this flu is more of a "media and politics flu' than the actual threat. He also said If this flu should be considered as a serious threat that people make out to be, then regular flu should be treated a worse threat.
(Of course, he didn't just spit out whatever was on his mind, what he said was followed by all those data, case studies, facts, and what-not. I'm just making it as simple as possible.)

I also talked doctors on this matter and what they said also matched with what my prof. said. Simply put, "It's best not to catch this flu just like any other flu. However, if you get it and if you're an average person (no serious on-going illness and not deadly old), don't worry about it."

I don't know if they're ignorant and drooling stupiditity, but what I'm sure is that they're people who are ......far more knowledgeable people than,,,,this zinfamous or something.

BTW, Unless you're very old or have serious health problems, getting vaccination for h1n1 is not a good idea in this stage. Preparation for this vaccin was rather short meaning that it might cause more harm (due to possible side effects) than good.

lol that's a joke right?

sorry, but news of an entire ship dying from the flu would never be kept hush hush. They might try, but it would get out, and to reputable news agencies. 😉

at sea quarantine of entire ships? please, this isn't zombieflu, all they need to do is quarantine individuals. close quarters help spread bugs quick, yes, and that was partially the reason the 1918 H1N1 spread so damn quick - military. Close quarters plus constantly moving around = pathogen heaven.

oh dear.

first, realize that even in the scientific and medical community, there is never unison. Highly respectable professionals quite often disagree with other highly respected professionals. It's how we keep advancing in knowledge. Someone will be right, someone wrong.

Not saying what I've researched is absolutely correct, well, the research is sound but there isn't nearly enough data to prove it is correct with this exact bug, specific to the common strain going around. Unknown is if there have been any mutations, as geneticists take quite a bit of time to map these pathogens and discover how the bug is getting by.

But what I'm alluding to, is the fact that historical analysis, and so far following the actual stats, is that this strain of H1N1 is NOT anymore dangerous for infants and the elderly. But, in the age groups in-between, it seems to be more virulent and bringing about stronger immune reactions, thus creating more severe illness. Now, that more severe illness for many could just be a high grade fever for H1N1 when they only get a low grade fever typically with seasonal influenza.

Note: seasonal influenza, at least the more common strains, has a very very low mortality rate. The numbers who die from influenza are very low in comparison to the number infected annually.
The number infected with the current H1N1 strain is a low number so far, so mortality rate is really unknown.
The individuals even basis underlying conditions, things many people have but never know about, often don't see a serious reaction from seasonal influenza. They get sick just like everyone else. Something is different this time around, as people who have gotten by just fine with previous influenza strains are being hit severely by H1N1.

Research has theories as to why this happens. Also note, some people my age, healthy, have been hit by serious complications from H1N1 influenza (22, college student). It's a ripe age to be hit by bugs, but it is extremely rare that you ever hear about a college student having life threatening complications from a seasonal influenza infection. Yet, it is happening with this strain of H1N1. The medical community will blast the cases as individuals with underlying conditions who have "complications" from the bug, yet NEVER state what those conditions and complications were. Were those complications due only to the influenza bug? Or did this person have diabetes or a heart defect or asthma or what.
But the issue is, these people have gotten by just fine with other influenza infections.

I just don't know how to take a lot of this. I've lectured about complications such as viral pneumonia caused by H1N1 and cytokine storms, all in the healthy adult category (cytokine storms only happen in the healthy, those with strong immune systems). But I just don't know what is happening, because no research points to sound conclusions of what is happening, and we won't know until well after this bug has integrated into the normal seasonal flu rotation. We have research that indicates certain things happened with the last major H1N1 pandemic, of 1918 fame, that points to those complications having existed then and being responsible for the high mortality rate (as compared to seasonal influenza). But we don't have solid, guaranteed evidence that was precisely the case, since medical research and documentation hadn't occurred at the time of the pandemic. The CDC and WHO are recording that information now, and medical scientists are researching the bug and tracking the genetics and structures of the current strain, but solid answers won't be available until all is said and done.

What does seem to be the case so far, is that it is indeed a serious bug; in the developed world, however, as long as hospitals can provide the necessary care for severe cases, the mortality rate will remain close to seasonal influenza's mortality rate. We've seen a lot of surprising serious cares, but a majority of them have received the proper care and attention. As long as hospitals can continue to provide the resources for treatment, many of the serious cases will survive. If those resources become stretched thin, then things will change. And in the less developed countries, it already seems like this bug is a lot worse than the seasonal flu. It's causing more severe cases in patients who would normally stay out of the hospital with seasonal influenza, and that's a striking difference. The U.S. medical providers may be better equipped this time around for the new H1N1 strain, which may be the important point to take away.

They didn't say the whole ship died. They said two deaths. The rest of the article says there was a quarantine. The CBS article confirms that 70 sailors were quarantined on a single ship for N1H1 infection. Even if the rest is a lie (which is probable), we still know two things.

1) The military does force vaccinations on it's members.
2) There was a LARGE outbreak of N1H1 on a single ship and minor outbreaks on 3 others according to CBS.
3) That is scary.

also routine. Any infection spreads fast on naval ships. Military has always forced vaccinations on specific groups, and heavily stressed it for the rest. The Navy is intense about vaccinations, it's part of the job. When you know you are going to be at various ports and in close proximity to a lot of people daily for a long time, infections are guaranteed, and will spread like a forest fire.
