I doubt many people even consider ammo cost when looking at Sigs and H&Ks.
They certainly should IMO.
Personally I think .357 Sig is kind of a dopey round - a 9mm with +P+ rounds can achieve similar ballistics, and can also shoot dirt-cheap range ammo.
Decent +P+ 9mm will run about the same price as the ammo for .357 sig and the .357 will still outperform the 9mm in energy and penetration. I am a big fan of 9mm +P+ (my nightstand pistol has a 15 round mag full of Winchester 127 gr. +P+ JHPs) but the .357 does edge it out in performance IMO.
I'm betting he already has a 9mm or two so why not try something different?
The .357 unarguably has more power potential than a 9mm. That's like saying that a 9mm +P could keep up with a .357 Magnum. They're all the same size diameter bullet, but you can fit more powder in the bigger cases of the .357 sig and .357 magnum.
And yes, I already have a Sig 228 which has been my nightstand\ccw pistol for nearly 10 years. Also have a 226, and a 239, both 9mm. Also toss in a couple berettas, a few walthers, some S&Ws and a couple of nice browning hi-powers. I've got plenty of 9mm handguns. And slightly over 5000 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
