Kaitlin Nootbaar, Oklahoma High School Valedictorian, Denied Diploma For Using 'Hell' In Speech


Kaitlin Nootbaar, a straight-A Oklahoma high school student, is being denied her diploma because she used the word "hell" in her graduation speech as valedictorian, and she and her parents are furious.

In delivering her address during the Prague High School graduation ceremony in May, the teen alluded to instances where people would ask her what she wanted to do with her life as graduation approached, to which she said, "How the hell do I know? I've changed my mind so many times," her father David Nootbaar told KFOR.

The statement received laughter and applause from her fellow graduates, her father said. But when Kaitlin went to collect her diploma this week, school officials said they won't release the certificate until she writes an apology for using the word.
 
It's stupid that they'd do such a thing but she's not too bright for a valedictorian if she thought nobody would care either.
 
She should instead write a letter to the administration, explaining that she is smarter than they are and should use the phrase "You are a fucking embarassment." in said letter. As valedictorian, I doubt any college is going to care if she doesn't have the paper.

EDIT: Also, she should tell the news that she got her straight A record submitting to sexual advances from the people messing with her.

When are we going to start demanding resignations and employment terminations of school officials who pull this shit? And recalls of elected school board officials who sanction it?
 
lol, home of the Red Devils. But yes, as used, it was a cuss word. So write the apology letter or don't. She already has a full-ride scholarship. Believe me, nobody cares about your high school diploma. You aren't going to hang it on your office wall.
 
first time i ever got detention i'd said hell on the playground in 2nd or 3rd grade and some little girl reported me for saying a bad word.

I would says in the context it's a pejorative...But I'm not sure how a pejorative meets the grounds for withholding a diploma by a public school. The bar must be pretty low in this back water wasteland. I would guess that there is no formal in the school for which words in what context are not acceptable, leaving it to the discretion of the administrator to decide how they feel about a word or phrase. To me it just shows that, no matter how we think we have come along as a country we are still just 2 steps away from the stupid puritanical ignorance of our beginnings.
