A girl I dated long ago was half Greek. She corrected me on several occasions, telling me that it's YEE-ROWS. However you pronounce it, I love those things.

Half Greek here, also pronounce it YEE-ROES. The best is lettuce, tomato, cucumber sauce and a big fat steak fry in the middle. That's the way they made em in Greece. Man were those the best gyros I've ever had. Plus, they were only about a dollar apiece. :)

Hmm... Traditional is onions and tomato and no lettuce? Weird. I hate tomatoes and I don't have onions and lettuce is just SO GOOD if it's Romaine or Baby Spinach! :D

Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of feta. With some chicken, tomatoes and tzatziki sauce.

Also good with falaffel, or shwarma.

but there absolutely has to be feta.

This has little to do with this thread, but pasta with grated Myzithra cheese on it - nothing else - is possibly the world's greatest food. :)

Wow I didn't even know there's chicken GYRO. The place where I usually order them only has lamb, onions, tomatoes and cucumber sauce and it is good even the smell.

"Of course, the proper pronunciation is YEE-ROWS."

yup. at the Greek restaurant near my St. Louis home, they wear little buttons that say "It tastes better when you say YEE-ROWS" More people pronounce it correctly as a result.

i wish you could buy a bottle of that sauce as salad dressing. I can't find it anywhere (and cucumber ranch doesn't taste the same IMO)

Well, I am used to hearing it pronounced ji-rows, as in "Critical hit: Gyros", followed close after by the sound of my 'mech exploding. Never tried the edible type, to the best of my recollection. ;)

The guy in Athens, not Georgia, Greece, at some little Gyro stand said it as Yee-Rows (or chose your favorite spelling that sounds the same)... He corrected us crazy Americans, both times we got one.
