I have heard/read that about squats in the past...but of course I never do squats.

What do you feel they are so essential?

Thanks.

because you want to avoid chicken leg syndrome.

Body needs Testerone to grow muscle (one major thing why you don't see women with big muscles).

Squats = big muscle = work them = body will PRODUCE more testerone = you get bigger faster

Working small muscles doesn't help your body to produce more testerone and you will forever stay small in general.

If you do squats your body will increase it's testerone output = you get bigger in a shorter space of time. Not only your legs/ glutes get bigger but your overall size will get bigger. Coupled with the fact that your training should be rounded = you develop much better and get more benefits from training.

Excellent explanation! Even though I was hoping the answer would be because squats help you build a strong core (which I need to do).

I will definitely start including squats in my routine! (even though I don't need more testosterone--I'm already going bald 😀isgust😉.

Yes it will give you a strong trunk (abs and back) also. If anyone thinks you can squat 1.5x+ bodyweight with a weak body is silly, unless your doing the squat very very poorly. Straight back all the time and as upright as you can.

Do it every other training session or every session is fine. You don't need a lot of leg work. Do a 8 week cycle of this and then say pop in a 4 week cycle of DeadLifts. DO NOT do calve raisers. They are the most pointless exercise EVER invented...(gym pet peeve)

Side note doing squats will help make it easier to have that cut 8 pack look if your bf% is moderately low (10-15% is doable) and your eating habits aren't very bad.

Koing

I thought calve raisers worked...I have charlie-horsed/cramped when doing them before...so I figured something was attempting to develop.

No kidding?!

I need to see someone do squats properly...it seems that the way I have had them described to me would make a person off-balance (easy to fall backwards).

No. Calve raisers are a very poor exercise. Your calves are very strong due to the short insertion (point where the muscle attaches itself to the bone) and your short foot = hugely STRONG.

You are just better off just training and let them be.

You don't sit 'backwards' you sit DOWN INBETWEEN YOUR LEGS.

Most people lack the basic flexibility to squat down properly.

Keep your back nice and straight. Take a deep breath before you go down. As you come up blow out slowly.

Only if they can't go down all the way (tight calves, tight hamstrings and poor flexibility)

You sit DOWN INBETWEEN YOUR LEGS and NOT 'BACKWARDS'.

Does that video show proper/improper form? The full movement didn't look 'smooth'.

I'm a former gymnast and I have never been able to figure proper squat-from out. If I can't get the from down perfectly I just quit...like I did with squats.

The video shows proper form. The back stays straight and lean forwards is minimal. I go all the way down. Knees stay out to the side. Bum comes back a bit but the back stays straight and strong. Hips come in under the bar as soon as I can. Slow down fast as possible up.

Your a former gymnast and don't know real depth in dips and the Gymnastics type of dips?! wtf?!

The hips going forwards would 'deceptively' make it not smooth but TRUST me very very few people will advise you to drive the hips in forwards. They simply do not understand body mechanics and I wouldn't know that either but I have a coach and he knows everything.

As soon as you come up drive your hips in under the bar. This makes it easier to squat and you can push more weight and Olympic lift better.

You have to practice it. Remember it WILL NOT COME TO YOU INSTANTLY. How many times did you catch a ball before you caught it when you were younger?

Got to put time in to doing it. You as a Gymnast should know this!

Huh?
I never said that about dips. I just wanted to see the video to see what everyone was talking about...I don't have access to parallel bars anymore so I would have to build something to do the dips.

I just don't know much about squats. Most gymnasts that I worked with never used any weights. I was about the only one and I did it out of vanity--it certainly didn't make me any better in gymnastics.

These dips look easy.
If you want an challenge, do pullups using only your middle fingers, or better yet, one middle finger with your other hand wrapped around the wrist of the pulling hand.

err i don't think he was bragging about it, just telling people that this can help in developping upper body strength...

Squats and dips are my two favorite exercises I think. I always do dips to burnout after my upper body exercise days.

With squats I'm having a lot of trouble with my lower back limiting me on the weights. I'm barely over body weight (weigh 166, do 3x5 at 175 right now) on squats. I've had multiple people who know what they're doing watch me and tell me my form is very good, so I don't think that's the issue.

BTW your vid encodings are terrible. I can't play them at all on this computer. Why not use a normal format? 😉

here is a description of an experienced powerlifter's squat technique.

this site has tons of squat videos
as done by the world's best squatters.

having a person who knows how to squat evaluate your technique
in person is invaluable, though.

Well because that is the video format they were in when they were recorded with my phone 😛. Couldn't be bothered to use the DV Cam to record then to capture then to encode. The phone records using .mp4 and my version of Premiere won't accept it so I can't encode to something else. The 2nd video I used 3gp and that was what it gave me 😛.

OH!

Build something to dip on. The dips done this way are a great builder imo.

The thing in Gymnastics is that is strength in what you do and you want to get stronger but not add too much weight as that will mess with your balance and not give you the benefits of being 'strong' and 'light'. Strong and big = not great for a Gymnast. What level did you get up to?

I stopped training after college but I still dream of putting rings and a pommel horse in my garage. I would love to come across some used equipment!

Go to a local Gymnastics club. They will love to have you there!

Setting up a pommel horse that would be safe enough is NO MEAN FEAT in a garage. They are pretty dam well secured to the floors at the Gym. The rings aren't too bad as long as you can secure it to the roof.

You must be pretty decent if you can do the pommel horse properly and some stuff on the rings. Very nice. Must be pretty dam stacked also.

A POMMELL horse doesn't need to be bolted:
http://www.gymsupply.com/DGS-407098.htm

A horse without handgrips (vault) can take a lot more torque than a pommel. But the vaults have been redesigned for safety so they don't look like a horse so much anymore:

http://www.spieth-gymnastic.com/Englisch/Products/Artistic/Vault/vault.html

Since I don't have easy access to a gymnastics gym anylonger I am trying to get re-stacked using weights. We'll see how it goes.

That Pommel thing is $2'500!!!!

That guy is a beast. Few guys can do it as straight as he and keep their form that tight. A lot more could do it with a less straight line. I'd take that though 😛

My kids are definately going to do Gymnastics 🙂

If they love it...it will consume their life! It's worth it.

Definately.

My little bro OL's with me at the club. He will be a national champion by the time he is 16 easily. He is 10 so he has a lot of training years in him. Can't imagine how good he'll be when he is 21. He would have trained for 11yrs already, and most guys 'start' to train then. He'll dominate everyone.

It will be a funky day when we do the same comp and he beats me 🙁 😛. I reckon I'll beat him to at least 32 but 34yrs+ beyond he'll kick my ass...
