Depends on the zip code and what type of membership you're looking for (24 Hour has 3: Fitness, Super Sport, and Sport Club), and if you want to work out at just that particular gym or another Gold/Crunch/24 Hour in that city, etc etc. Your best bet is to go to each one and ask

Ripoffs: Health Clubs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
? Don't sign long-term contracts for health club membership or pay for more than 30 days in advance. Month-to-month deals are much safer.
? Consider joining a YMCA or other community center in your neighborhood. Update!
? Don't fall for "free membership" contests that are really sales pitches.
? Take the contract home with you and read it thoroughly. Don't sign the contract at the club.
? Get any promises made by the sales-person included in the contract, or they don't mean a thing.
? In most states, you have three days from the day you sign a health club contract to cancel with no consequences.
? If you finance your membership and the club closes, you have no further obligation to pay.
? If you think a particular club may suit you, call the appropriate consumer agency in your state to check for outstanding complaints against the club. Tour the facility and ask questions.

you might want to avoid Crunch :Q
Crunch contracts - September 12, 2000
Atlanta contract members of Crunch should be aware that the company does not think that a contract is a binding or legal document. The company will not honor certain terms of signed contracts with customers and will not reply to inquiries made by the Clark Howard Show.
One caller to the Clark Howard Show was threatened to be physically thrown off of the property if she tried to enforce the terms of the contract.

I would pay no more than $38 to $45 a month. Find one that offers a month-to-month plan. As mentioned above, those that offer high down-payments plus monthly dues are not the best to be involved with.

I heard an advertisement for a decent sounding gym (free weights, machines, sauna, showers, pool, spa, indoor/outdoor tracks) on the radio today for like $20 a month here.

I know with our company discount, we can get a YMCA membership for $17/mo.

It's great, my gym (its a local one) is $208 for a year, $116 for one year. And I don't even have to leave my block, it's right around the corner (So that eliminates an excuse for not going!) Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to renew for one year, so I've paid $116.

I remember when I turned 18 the YMCA gym I used to go here in NYC asked for over $800+ for one year. Crazy expensive, but it was much bigger. The place I go to now is just one large room, but they have most things you would want to use.

If you can't afford those huge gyms or don't think you'd be getting your money's worth, then try to see if your city has a gym. In the city of Cerritos, there's a gym with just your basic equipment with an indoor swimming pool. It has a bicep machine, 5 treadmills, 1 elliptical (sp?) machine, tricep machine, bench press, weights of course and a couple more big machines, I just don't know the names to them :p. It only costs residents $25/year and an extra $5 per family member. Non-residents can join for $50/year or in the range of that +/- $10. So after a good workout, you can just head over to the swimming pool to cleanse yourself off ;)

Edit: Oh yeah what's nice about it is that it's in a park with tennis courts, basketball courts, and a baseball field :D. There's also another gym in Cerritos that's free but the equipment is not as good. Same type of environment, courts and park.

good for you... Golds is the BEST... free weights... all of them... all you ever need... skip the machines anywayz.. they are just to make you lifting easy... and if it was easy, then what is the point?

I got the Golds card from the late Joe himself... (i once competed for golds in the US) so i have to pay 0,0$ but trust me... world... is good, Gold's is the best!

I'm paying uhh.. whatever is included in my dorm room fees.

The UCI ARC is so damn nice. They could use a few more basketball courts though. :(

I'd love to get a gym membership but I can't afford it right now. I checked out the YMCA in downtown Vancouver, $42 a month plus a $50 joiner fee. What a rip off!

Right now I just work out at home. I use the Total Gym that I bought from Costco a couple of years ago. It's actually pretty good. I've seem fantastic results from using it. Of course I'd probably see even better results if I'd gone to a gym, but it's worked really well for me. Unfortunately I've hit the point where it doesn't provide enough weigh, so I just use it to warm up with and then do a ton of push ups. Hey, it's better than doing nothing :)
