It's annoying. It's almost as annoying as using a machine and letting the plates slap together. Grunting is OK, it's when I can hear you screaming from across the gym that you are just an AW.

When you lift heavy stuff sometimes you grunt. That's just the way it is.

Grunts dont bother me, but people counting reps next to me while I am counting in my head bothers me.

Dudes who think the locker room is there bedroom bothers me. Put a towel on when holding conversations you freak!

Did you ever stop to consider that she might be coming back off an injury ?

I hurt my knee last winter and had quite a few slow sessions as result. Judgemental creeps like you are
a big factor in keeping people too ashamed to get to the gym.

btw,if you've got enough energy to be noticing the length and intensity of other people's cardio, you aren't working hard enough !

Are they necessary? no.
They just happen sometimes, though, for me at least. Last few reps of my last set, i may grunt a little.

I take the 5lb dumbbells and grunt as loud as possible. Then I go to the stairmaster and grunt some more.

Agreed. Many people coming off injuries or just getting off the couch for the first time need to start off slow. There's no need to judge them. They have every right to use the equipment as you do.

Sometimes it is uncontrollable and completely necessary to grunt. For instance, if you are pushing the limits of what you can do, or doing a very heavy compound exercises to the brink of failure. Doing a max set of heavy Squats, for example, will do it.

But even then, it's not "yelling". It never gets to that volume really. And it's perfectly reasonable, considering you can tell that the person doing it is completely spent (face is red as hell, sweat everywhere, painful look on face, gritted teeth, etc.). Most of these clowns do it for show and you can tell by the fact that EVERY rep they are yelling across the room. These same people spend half an hour doing curls using only their back and momentum to lift the weight.

I think I remember reading some study that showed that in situations of extreme physical stress, the body uncontrollably grunts to correct posture, etc. I think the study was on squats, but grunting somehow righted the diapraghm causing better posture for the lift... Don't quote me on it, though, as I couldn't produce the reference for the life of me, and I could be skewing it.

Most people do it for show, though. These people tend to hang out at the crappy "econo-gyms" like your 24-hour fitness, bally's etc. I am friends with a couple of people like this, and trying to lift with them always becomes an annoying discussion of "how much do u think he can bench" or "look at that idiot " or "what a wuss". This is why I generally workout at home with people that are actually serious about their time spent lifting, and could care less about how they look while lifting. The day I can find a gym with a lifting platform is the day that I have found a gym worthy of my cash. That, and a gym that blares Death Metal would be cool too.

Yeah we probably have judgemental wankers in our gym concerned about others workouts or others making noise but nobody notices them over at the Nautilas section.

are you serious? Im not working hard enough because the lady next to me is going slow and I notice it?
Brilliant!!

When you go slower than a walking pace...and I did see her walking fine before and after her workout....you arent doing any good by going slower on an elliptical.

Judgemental creep? coming from a person with geekbabe as a username. Dont you think geekbabe is a bit judgemental? This thread was about gym annoyances. I am not allowed to have an opinion on something I saw and you have no clue about? Dont take things so personal.

I walked each and every day with a knee that ached so badly that it would keep me awake all night.

I still say that if you're paying that much attention to somebody ele's cardio that you are not working hard enough yourself, that you'd come here and post a thread about it makes you a judgemental jerk.

Why don't you mind your own business in the gym and not worry about what other people are doing unless it directly affects you?

I could see your point, but 95% of the time I can tell that it is just the person acting stupid or being lazy. This happens on many occasions at my college gym. For instance, wedenesday night I was having a nice bicycle ride when two freshmen got on the bikes next to me and started acting like assholes. They would just talk and joke around loudly while doing hardly any biking whatsoever.

Im sorry if it sounds selfish, but when I am excersising I dont feel like hearing you yelling across the gym at your friend or acting like a fool next to me while I am concentrating on excersising. I dont mind you talking to a friend, just dont do something dumb like decide to start stretching in the middle of the jogging track like this chick did last night.

I do give props to people who go to the gym that are trying to get in decent shape though, and I usually tell them to keep it up. Usually those people will walk the track for a long time and not waste time doing the bare minimum on one of the machines.

This is unbelievable. A woman who is no more then 3' from me is paying a lot of attention? I posted in a thread. I didnt make it. So get over yourself and get some self esteem. My post wasnt about you. You have no idea what you are talking about.
