You can call it whatever you like, but in the end it is still a purse, you big old pussy! :)

Real men just don't.

Through the week a messenger bag that I got from a user group at Epic (healthcare EMR). It's 5 years old and good as new. Carry my laptop, lunch, notes, power cable, mouse, various tools, ect in there.

If I'm hiking or going to be "out" for a while like at a zoo with the kids or whatever I use the daypack that came with my Osprey luggage. Carries a laptop, two water bottles, and enough other room for snacks and whatever I may need without being too big.

Pockets. If I have to take something beyond the usual phone+keys+wallet I can double my capacity by using my back pockets too.

My pockets and a "Think Geek" backpack. Most durable backpack I have ever owned, heavy duty brown canvas that is large enough to hold a 17" laptop.

I previously used ScotteVest clothes, cuz they had lots of pockets. BUT, they are also poorly constructed and fall apart easily. And they are expensive so I really dont like stuff that falls apart.

I got addicted to them years ago. Bought a couple jackets and several shirts and one pair of dress pants and working pants.
I do not buy them at all anymore. Learned my lesson the hard way.

I purchased one of these sling packs from Pacsafe about a year ago. It works well and I am happy with it but at the same time I find myself using a backpack more for the extra space. Knowing what I know now, I don't think I would buy another sling bag and would just get a good quality backpack instead.

Now I purchase Duluth Trading company clothes. MUCH better construction and they also have pockets.

I kinda wish more jackets had both left and right interior pockets. Thats the only complaint I've got with mens fashion. And it isnt just Duluth but pretty much every brand, American and Asian based.

Anyway, heres the vest I bought, and I like it:

The thing is so pocket-filled and soft I wear it even on mild days just because.

J/K a bit but I still have a set of 782 gear and an ALICE pack.

What fits in my pockets myself in general.

That's what I wear to work minus the suspenders!

My pistol belt with the quick release disappeared though, and I'm using an earlier test model that they didn't go with for obvious reasons. I like the quick release, but not enough to buy another belt.

I prefer a sling bag vs a backpack for just going about your business as stuff is easily accessible without having to take a backpack off each time. For hiking a backpack is the best. For riding a bike a backpack is better unless you have a bike-specific messenger sling bag.

If it's a crowded place I definitely prefer a sling/messenger bag style. It's easier to keep it under your arm and harder to pick pocket. They are also easier to tuck to your chest on a crowded bus or elevator and not whack people in the head as you pass by vs. a backpack.

This may work: http://www.ebags.com/product/maxpedition/fatty-pocket-organizer/219953
The company makes all kinds of pouches and such like this. Something I can carry in one hand, holds my essentials, does not offend my masculinity, is well made, and is not pricey or or a hipster magnet. I don't think I can do a shoulder strap, even cross chest. Just not me.
I just bought one of those to contain my jumpstart battery & cables. It would definitely work. Has a carry handle up top. Not sure about belt attachment - may have to add on a belt clip. It's not hard-sided though so spectacles might get squozen, but yeah, good choice. $25 on Amazon. I even covered the bare velcro with a Texas flag patch.

Serious answer: My car keys go in a front pocket, my wallet in my hip pocket, cell phone and tablet I just carry. If I have more shit to carry I'll just use a tote or canvas sack/grocery bag or throw it in my laptop bag.

No way I'm carrying a purse around.

I'd much rather have a messenger bag vs carrying a tote. I like a tote, and I have multiple NPR ones -but a tote (or 3) is for when you are specifically heading out to the bodega or grocery store to shop and want to avoid getting more plastic bags.

I'm glad I live in an urban area where carrying a sling bag of any size is considered ok for a guy. I have a small one, a medium one and a couple large ones. Each covers any situation. The large ones are not considered metrosexual for the most part. They are large.

But they can be unwieldy, simply not necessary, or just look inappropriate for a situation. Say running some errands, and everything is walkable or public trans-able cause you live in an urban area. You may need to ship a couple small items out at the UPS store, so all you need is a small bag. Or say a date in the city that you suspect might end up at her place - in addition to your wallet, cell and keys you also need condoms and a phone battery pack and cable to charge up in the morning before you head back home. A small sling bag is perfect for that, vs showing up at your date with a massive messenger bag.

Or going on a date in the city at a park and you want to bring a bluetooth speaker, a bottle of wine and some cheese. A medium messenger is perfect for that. There are various situations which justify a certain sized bag. Have one for the occasion!
