I have my monitor set to 1024x768. I most of my games in 1600x1200. Well, when i go to play them, the screen moves, its really wierd. Itll scoot the screen like half an inch to the right, and half an inch down. While its still playable, it cuts off part of the screen.

What the hell can i do to fix this? Thanks dudes

Does changing the refresh rate help? (I know what you're saying, but I can't think of a solution beyond changing your monitor's horizontal and vertical)

You must have some seriously serious hardware to play games at 1600x1200!

Changing the refresh rate to something lower is definitely worth trying, especially if you are currently running the monitor out of spec for that resolution.

Heh, its a 3400+ with 6800GT OC. The refresh rate is at 100 right now, and it was supported (its gotta be if its in the panel) so i used it.

All you have to do is set your resolution in windows to 1600x1200 and adjust your monitor so it looks good. Then you can change your windows resolution back to 1024x768, and load up your game. Because you set 1600x1200 in windows, it will use those settings in game, and it will look correct at that resolution.

edit: This doesn't have anything to do with your refresh rate. On a related note though, many games have commands like r_displayrefresh (quake 3) that you can set to your desktop refresh rate to make the game look smoother. That has nothing to do with your issue though.

Then how are you running your games in 1600x1200?

If your complaint is "I'm running my monitor out of spec and it looks like crap", the answer is "Get a better monitor".

Try moving the monitor to the side a little bit. Sometimes weird interference may cause the weirdness. Also make sure you aren't running the monitor beyond it's rated ability (overclocking) and if you do, make sure you get a better heatsink and fan for it otherwise it can overheat and cause problems. Make sure you use small increments when overresoluting. 1 pixel at a time and reboot after each push.

there's no point in playing a game at a higher resolution if your monitor doesn't it. you're just making the video card work harder than it really needs to.

Go to the manufacturer's website and find out what refresh rate, if any, is supported at 1600x1200.

Or at least do what I said earlier, and use a lower refresh rate at 1600x1200, try 72 - 75 Hz instead of 100 Hz.

It says 1600 x 1200 @ 50 to 76 Hz so if you're really running at 1600x1200 with a refresh of 100 Hz like you said above, you're way, waaay out of spec.[/quote]

I used to have a 19" MAG that was specced out to 16x12 @ 66Hz. I used to run it at 70Hz all the time. (Yes, I know, slightly out of spec). It used to shift over almost an inch too, so I had to tweak the adjustment on the monitor.

I would be kind of curious what the monitor's OSD says about what the actual sync freqs. that the card is sending are, and more importantly, why.

I didnt know it mattered or would make an actual diff lol. Other than games its fine if i leave it on 100hz right?

I tried lowering it like you said a while ago, guess i didnt lower it enough.

OK, so i went back and lowered it to 75, and it still does it. And get this...if i lower the refresh rate to 72 at 1024x768, it messes my DESKTOP (outside of the game, ie not running) the same way too!

Sounds to me like you got a pretty jacked up monitor. May be caused by running it waaayy out of spec for awhile. Just because a game will allow you to set the in game settings to 16X12 doesn't mean your monitor can run it. It doesn't matter what system a game is on, the graphics settings always have the same options.
For future reference, just know what the max is for your monitor and stick with that.

Any time you change the refresh rate at a given resolution, you may need to adjust the picture, but if the rates are within the monitor's spec you should only need to do it once (at that resolution) and the monitor should remember your settings.

In other words, it was not surprising that the picture changed when you changed the refresh rate at 1024x768.

What you should do is:
1. Make sure the 1600x1200 refresh is set to 72, 75, or 76 Hz. Then adjust the picture with the monitor controls.
2. Switch back to 1024x768, with the refresh set at 100 if you like. Adjust the picture if needed.
3. Switch back to 1600x1200 and see if the monitot now remembers the settings from step 1. Check the monitor "information" display to see if the refresh is correctly set to 76 Hz or less.
4. Profit!
