Guys, I need your help to come back online!

Hey!

I've been away for about a month because I moved to the US for a year as an exchange student. I'm at the University of Tennessee,Knoxville now and I've got some nice WUs on my laptop I want to send away. But I've got a major problem!

I bought a wireless card: 3COM 11a/b/g (3CRPAG175). But as soon as I pop out its antenna, my screen starts flashing and windows locks up. When I remove the PCMCIA card then, the flashing stops but windows remains locked. Only a hard reset works. With the antenna retracted (= the card is off) everything works fine and I can install all drivers. But as soon as I switch on the card by pulling out the antenna, everything goes down the drain.

By now, I tried to disable all other network ports and tried in safe mode, but that was a no go. My laptop should be able to handle it. It has a PCMCIAII slot with 3,3V just as the card requires.


Any help of you guys would be very appreciated as I really want to continue participating in my beloved DC forums here at TA!

I just tried the card in another laptop computer and it froze that system as well ... so now I begin thinking that it's the card and not my laptop ...

I would also think the card was at fault. I've never heard of one locking up a computer though.....

Hey BMC,
It looks like there's been no updated driver's for this card in a year. I'd take it back
and buy a card with more recent drivers. Ive had good luck with NETGEAR WG511.

I avoid 3com. They're expensive cheap cards normally. Netgear is better, IMO. Good luck. And welcome to the US, too bad it had to be TN.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I've seen reports of CHEAP (price) Microsoft cards at CompUSA. $12 + shipping supposedly. They're decent cards, and one of the few Microsoft products you'll see me recommend.

Yip, got a new card today and that baby is working without any probs!!! But at first the nice lady at the computer desk of my university didn't want to believe me and said like "we've never had one of those cards failing on anybody. I guess it's your laptop, not our card!" Then I told her to put the card into her OWN laptop. She uses the same model that I had. And guess what --> lock up!! :evil: That felt soooo damn good ...

Anyway, I'm back online and will continue DCing from my laptop ... no comparison to my home fleet ( I MISS YOU ) but better than no CPU! :beer::beer:
