Guy puts $500 deposit on a "perfect" car...

Will probable be out the money. If he used a CC for the deposit then he might get that back, but the room/board he will have to sue for to have any chance.

Wow, that's really messed up...you think suing them would be relatively easy with circumstances like that.

Read the feedback link, it makes me surprised that with a record like that that they haven't been sued into oblivion. It sounds like they're almost certain to be doing something illegally.

Why is the car industry filled with douchebags? I don't understand this phenomena.

I know not everyone in the industry is a lying sack of shit, but it seems to me that car dealerships and auto shops have a tendency to draw in con men. Is it just the nature of the industry or do lying sacks of shit turn to this industry?

Anyway, it's the consumerist, so take it with a grain of salt, but I would not be surprised one bit if everything is true about the article. I hope they get sued to oblivion if everything is correct.

My friend is in same circumstance, but he bought it. from a huge dealer...and they did the repair, did not disclose the damage,etc...he now has a lawyer and is suing them...their collision shop even printed everything out for him...LOL....asshats. do not trust any dealer. you can get up to 3x the amount of damages done, court and lawyer fees and keep the vehicle. He is now playing the waiting game...he will probably get 10gs out of it and lawyer fees... POS.

He's an idiot for flying across the country to buy a car without researching the dealer. I have no sympathy for dumb consumers.

😕

I understand where you're coming from, but that doesn't make it right. That's like saying you have no sympathy for girls who are raped because they were wearing a skirt that was just asking for it. (yeah, hyperbole to the max).

I never said it was right, and I can't stand shady business practices by dealers. However, there is more than enough easily-accessible information on this dealer that it should've been a no-go from the beginning. People sniff out deals but never wonder why they're so good.

I'd have to agree with angry hampster here - I think it's common knowledge that in the used car market, you need to be extra, extra cautious just as a given. Personally, I've had enough dealings with car salespeople to stick with my basic rule for that type: assume they're lying until the evidence overwhelmingly establishes otherwise. I'm not saying the dealership's action was right, because it was neither ethical nor legal, but the consumer here failed to practice due diligence also.

I disagree with the comments saying he was stupid, because he only placed a deposit on the car. He didn't buy the car outright. When he got there, he found there was a problem with it. And he's asking for his money back because the car was not in the condition described. The way the dealership is holding on to his deposit IMO is outright fraud. If the car WAS indeed as described, I wouldn't have an issue with it.

He places money for a car.
Dealership cannot get him the car as they described.
He should get the money back.

This is what it comes down to. The item was not as described. That should be reason enough to refund a deposit.

I am on the other side, I expect to have to put a deposit down, if goods are not as advertised and the asshat on the other end refuses (illegally) to refund the deposit just because the US court system is broken and it costs more for a lawyer than its worth I expect to be able to break his legs, but NO ... then I'm the bad guy and the damn cops will show up.

Never buy from a dealer. Yes, that means don't buy a new car. Yes, someone needs to, but let stupid people do that.

Edit: Also, rich people can buy them
