It really is easy. And, the wonderful thing about brakes is the longer you put it off, the more it'll cost you to fix.

Addressing the safety issue:

After the friction material gets thin enough they'll have less ability to dissipate heat and will be more likely to fade and once the friction material is gone they won't be functioning at all.

Now, like others have pointed out, the rear brakes probably do 30% of the work stopping the car. However, the real possibility is that you'll be stopping in the middle of a curve in the road. Because, all the braking will be done by the front, the rear will very likely fishtail and swing out of control.

Um... this happened to my car; BREAK shoes where not changed for WAY to long and the brake cut itself open and leaked BREAK fluid everywhere. Next thing i know, no BREAKS at all. This is a 1997 chevy sonoma.

1 for 4.

Sorry I don't know what you are talking about.. I'm dyslexic.

Brakes. Chevrolet S10. GMC Sonoma. OP has disc brakes, not drum brakes.
Oh, ok.

if you jack on the brakes or press them hard and fast the fluid will push to the back reservoir and leak out regardless.
This is what happened.. pumping the breaks was a bad idea.

I wouldn't want to experience the worst possible behavior from a vehicle in an evasive maneuvering situation.
good point.

Do what is required to pass inspection, then pass inspection legitimately.
If you fail an inspection and then don't you have a few days to get it fixed and can just show the cop your receipt.
