Guy I work with had a stroke last Thursday...

...and he waited more than 24 hours to go to the hospital because he didn't have insurance (he's a temporary employee) and can't afford a hospital visit.

Nice guy, I feel for him. He's in his 50s and has a wife and son at home.

Hope he pulls through. Sad state of affairs that a hard working citizen of this country can't even afford healthcare.

Our planet is honestly just in a sad state. I have extremely low hope for humanity. Hope that only exists because of people like Brian Greene, Michio Kaku, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

It's an absolute shame that a country with the wealth of ours cant guarantee health coverage to every citizen. Greatest country on earth my ass.

no insurance is not a reason to not go. they can't deny you. lie and tell them u forgot your insurance card if u have to.

I'd be reluctant to go to the hospital for most stuff if I was broke, but with a stroke you need to get your ass in there at the seed of light so they can give you that stuff can possibly nullify the stroke. You only have a very small window to get to the hospital.

and a reliable car and housing and higher education and free child care and a really good paying job and..and...and...

sounds like choices were made
adults have the choice to refuse treatment?
emergency rooms (most if not all?) do not refuse treatment based on ability to pay?

Hmm, sounds like he had a choice between racking up hospital debt he couldn't pay, and having some unpredictable part of his brain die, leading to loss of mind/body function and possibly to his inability to take care of his family.

So he waited 24 hours, then went to the hospital, so how he gets both. Good job there buddy. Stupidity brings its own reward.

If you think you're having a stroke, go to the hospital ASAP, and tell them you think you're having a stroke.

Why should a hard working American have to make that choice? Bankrupt my family by getting treatment for a medical emergency? That's some fucking choice. 🙄

Well, if it makes people feel any better they often can't do anything for a stroke anyways :-/

I forgot, everyone here has excellent healthcare through their employer, makes 6 figures, is married to a supermodel, and just waiting for their stock options so they can buy a new yacht.

not now. but once you make health care a given, people move on to their next need and demand that we a given as well.

Yeah, free people from slavery, and then next thing you know they want to vote. Slippery slope I tell ya...

You just love having people to feel superior to don't you?

My points are these: (1) That hospital debt is preferable to the effects of a debilitating stroke, for both he and his family, and (2) OP says he went to the hospital anyway (but too late), meaning that he's going to be saddled with both the debt and with the effects of the stroke.
