Gurus pls recommend an automatic watch...below $100

I am tired of replacing batteries so I decide to go automatic, either mechanical or solar energy.

Seiko has some auto-rewinding watches (not Kinetic) below $100. I also found a swiss brand using solor energy.
Could you please recommend one below $100?

Thanks.

How often were you replacing batteries?

My fossil of 5 years lasted 4.5 years on its original battery.

i had an automatic fake rolex. one of these days i'm going to have it repaired. $10

Well I know some good brands have battery life of 5 years, the thing is I want to go back to traditional way. I saw a movie that the officer in the submarine told his soldier that the mechanical watch was the real watch, they could not afford the mistake when they needed to replace the battery under the sea. 🙂

Good choice - quartz watches are for sissies!

Jump on eBay and search for Seiko 5, Seiko S-Wave, Invicta, and Citizen automatic. You will find any number of nice watches within your budget. On a cursory search, here are a few I find attractive (keep in mind I tend to like military, pilot's, and divers watches, all of which are utilitarian and no-frills):

Citizen military

All-purpose, moderately dressy Seiko 5

Very attractive military Seiko 5

Interesting S-Wave (they tend to be an acquired taste, but I like this one - it's tough to tell what that bezel looks like IRL, but they are so cheap it's not a costly experiment)

Another cool S-Wave

Citizen diver

Thanks! I forgot to link to any Invictas. Some folks prefer the older Invicta 8926 design, which is a direct ripoff of the Rolex Submariner - if you run a search for Invicta 8926 on eBay you will find some.

They changed the bezel on the watch you linked after actual or threatened litigation from Rolex (though it is now a ripoff of the Omega Seamaster bezel instead!). The Invictas are very nice watches for the money, but I am intellectually bothered by the fact that they are basically wannabe Rolexes. This should not be an impediment for most folks, however.

DV,

I notice the new bezel 8926's are WAY cheaper than the old syle. Is that difference exclusively due to the fact it was discontinued and has become rarer? Hard to justify an extra $40-50 for a different bezel. Also, $90 just seems TOO cheap for a high quality watch. Is it that good of a deal?

(very close to buying one or the other...)

Yeah, I think it really is a question of relative rarity. The old-style 8926s have been going for $89 on eBay for years. I can't speak from firsthand experience in re. the Invictas - I have never actually handled one - so I have a hard time answering your latter question. The Invicta has always had a sterling reputation on the Poor Man's Watch Forum (hey, I just realized I have watches # 1, 2, and 5 on that list!) and elsewhere. Frankly, many of the most desirable cheap watches (esp the Seiko automatic divers) are unavailable in the States, so at some point you just have to do your homework and take the plunge. I had to do this with my Seiko SKX779, my Yao-ized SKX007, and my Sinn 656 (this one is not a cheap watch, unfortunately, at least not by my standards), none of which are available at retail in the US, and all are great.

I dove this weekend with my SKX779 with great satisfaction - we only went down to about 50 feet, so it was not a major test of waterproofness (though most of your typical rugged-looking Fossil-caliber watches would have been destroyed), but the diver's suit extension worked like a charm over my gloves (we were wearing dry suits).

I Love Seiko watches. I have a Seiko Kinetic autorelay but you won't find that watch under 350 bucks.

Actually, the Kinetic watches are available for as little as $110 from reliable vendors like Chronograph.com, and similar prices on eBay. I am more of a mechanical movement guy (the Kinetics have a kinetically-powered quartz movement, which is not for me), but whatever floats your boat . . .

ignore the retail price on invicta's, those are marked up 5x cost.

He's not talking about MSRP, but the actual prices on eBay. You are 100% right that their retail prices are ridiculous, and I can't imagine you could even find one to buy at anywhere near MSRP, except perhaps at an "outlet store" or something similar. There are some online vendors who charge way too much for these watches, but even then they are a fraction of retail.
