Gurus and Others Must Read

I am going to attempt to start building PCs for people for cash. Im pretty knowledgeable and experienced in building PCs and definitely want to go into it prepared. My major concern is any incompatabilities between hardware. I say this because I had built a system for a friend a couple years back and the mobo I got didn't jive with the Geforce2 video card I got to put in it, made me look and feel like a nitz. Anyways heres what I'm interested in doing...

I am going to provide 4 different configurations, 2 Athlon XP boxes and 2 P4 boxes. I would like to only use ASUS and ABIT boards. Nforce 2 on the AMD side, 875p for the intels. Additionally, I'm thinking of sticking strictly with ATI video cards: 9200, 9600, 9800. Are there any known incompatabilities between these chipsets/mobos and any of these "new" ATI video cards? Personal experience is preferable, but word of mouth will do fine. I ask that any further posts also reinforce/challenge problems that may be listed. Thank you very much in advance

You demand that "Gurus" read your thread. I thought you were asking for help. (Not that I'm a guru...I know my way around well enough) Then you say "help me make money by doing my job of researching my materials...FOR ME!"

Read and research yourself if you want to make money. Heck, all I do is spend money and I do more research than you before buying anything!

I provide PCs and services for a living - but understand that it's a 25 hour a day job, 8 days a week. At least if you intend to do a decent job of it - it's taken me about 25 years to master it. And if you are not good at customer service to the completely non-knowledgeable (read as "kissing their asses"), you'll have a tough time retaining your clientelle. Not to mention the fact that every obsqure, bizzaro problem known to mankind will rear up and bite you in the ass!

Actually Im 28 and have my own place thank you very much. As for the title of my thread, its called marketing, an integral part of doing business meathead (it appears to have worked on you btw). I didn't ask for anyone to do research for me, I asked if anyone knew of any issues with compatability. Thats all I wanted! And what better way for me to research than to speak with others who have experience with a vast quantity of different hardware configurations like us anandtech users. If you can honestly tell me that through your researching of web pages and other routes, you have identified all possible hardware conflicts I will quickly label you a liar. You need to watch the markets, read as many reviews as you can, and gradually build your own sixth sense of what is a doable system and what's over the edge. We can help you now for this one time, but what if your next customer wants something entirely different? Will we still be doing your homework then?

But of course. I dont know why the backlash here. I had ONE bad experience with a motherboard/video card combination and just want to make sure it doesnt happen again, especially with someone who trusts me to build them a legit system. BTW I searched around before and after I finally figured out what the prob had been and guess where I found the answer?? Right here in these forums. Please don't try to razz me because I'm trying to build systems for other people. I just want to make sure (because in my research to date I havent found any) there are no issues here. Why are you all acting so friggin crazy here?

The only way for a part time builder to sell any macines is to build High end systems, fast, lots of ram. and the latest in hardware. You can never compete on the low or ultra low end stuff. I have seen Compaq machines with monitors and winxp + a whole bundle of software for under $600.00 and a pretty good warrenty. Plus the cases these machines are kinda neat looking.

There are no short cuts. Taking the time to read all the threads you can, here at ATF, will give you some idea of what hardware/software works well together.

2. Don`t be a 6 year old and call people names. MichaelD has been here a lot longer than you and obviously has helped a lot more people than you did.
3. Search for chipset names on boards, that might bring some old threads about compatibility.

With that attitude, you WILL fail. To answer your question though, I have built several machines based on Asus A7N8X boards with Radeon 9600, 9700 and 9800 video cards with WinXP with no issues. Install all the latest drivers. I have only built one P4 (Abit IC7-MAX2 2.8C HT) with a Radeon AIW 9600 Pro. Again no problems. As always, YMMV. My results may not be the results you achieve.

The Michae'ID' thing was pretty lame, I must say. You want serious advice? I've been installing FIC boards in AMD systems for years now, and rarely have any problems, with either the boards themselves, or their drivers. Other than that, you'll need to provide us with data on which specific equipment you intend to use before we can relate our experiences with it. However, it is likely that you'll get more and better replies if you were to ask, as opposed to demanding, assistance - not to mention avoiding the urge to play funky games with another member's handle.

i build systems for friends... they all want to spend as little money as possible. I standardized on one motherboard with built in video/sound/lan. Simplify! And it's unbelievable the things that these people do to their computers! It has opened my eyes to how difficult it would be to make a living doing this. I don't do it to make money, i do it for the Karma points. So you guys that do it for a living have my respect.
