A gun is like an extractor set. It's a highly specialized tool that you hope you never need, but when you need it no other tool will really do.

People want it on their person because they can't predict when or where they may need it. As for myself, I don't have a CCW and don't conceal carry because I don't feel the cost and hassle and potential incidents of misunderstandings are outweighed by the benefit of being able to successfully deploy a firearm in the unlikely scenario that I need one in public.

A well trained and well armed populace will always win against terror, which includes malls, schools, movie theaters, churches, and even at an art contest drawing muhammad. Even a pistol will get the job done if they ban semi rifles. The more armed, the better.

Now I will add that we can probably do better screening people who are legally allowed to obtain guns. For example, any misdemeanors = no gun. Give them a psych eval as well. This isn't rocket science. However, most terrorists can get guns illegally so making it more difficult for our populace to get them is a moot point. France and CA have strict-ass gun laws and shootings are happening there.

Yeah there's definitely not an active shooter situation going on right now that was immediately stopped because people were carrying guns. Definitely not.

And have you happened to notice that all the shootings occur in gun free zones, where law abiding citizens don't take their gun. A no gun sign has never stopped a criminal.

Is your suburb that dangerous? I've only lived in Cleveland, Detroit, Seattle and Denver (in the city proper not their burbs) so I have no idea what it is like to be attacked in dangerous areas.
