15 is sort of old to start "hunter safety"

better late then never

Yup. You have to ingrain that shit at a young age. I got my first gun (single shot 20 gauge) for Christmas when I was 7 years old. :D

Guns were created to service wars and eventually adopted for home defense because it was cheap and effective. I do think you have every right to defend your home. I just think it's better to do it with pots and pans if you can rather than slamming lead into someone unless of course, you're fired upon. Then by all means shoot them in the chest in retaliation but don't come bitchin at the man when your kid does something stupid and shoots himself, you or your wife or your neighbor or your dog because you forgot to keep it locked or you've taught your kid to unlock the darn thing and use it. There's also the argument that you should be proactive and shoot before being shot but that's another touchy subject too. Terrible and pointless argument that results in people getting pissed off at each other. If I only had a gun, I'd just wave that thing do flaunt my stance of dominance in such irresponsible ways but I will because I can. Itchy and Scratchy show almost.

This may be the dumbest thing I have ever read. Seriously, WTF?

So if an armed intruder breaks into your house you attack him with a pot. When he shoots you in the chest, you yell "timeout!!!" and go and get your gun to retaliate?

What the fuck are you saying?

Wow you guys let the troll derail this thread?

I expect my fellow gun owners to be able to spot it much earlier than this. He is sitting back laughing at you guys right now.

Its amazing they ID him immediately and then proceed to feed the little fucker through his cage.

I think I may have to add to ignore list, but if everyone keeps quoting and responding then its kinda pointless.

As for OP, I still recommend a proper training program. You can probably find books and vids at Amazon.

Thanks for confirming that you are just a troll.

If it's a trollage to express one's thoughts, we'd all be trolls. I try to make a reasonable argument by making arguments that are reasonable so if you can't accept that then don't.

its trollish to go into a thread you know you dont agree with only to derail what was a useful and educational conversation among people with a common interest

You should try harder.

OP: any age is a good age as long as they can understand whats going on. IMO the younger the better, the earlier they learn that guns are a specific tool and not a taboo showoff piece for their friends the better you are.

I would like to say as someone who Identifies with left wing causes. Not all of us are gun haters. Most of my friends lean left and own guns. I don't own a handgun but i do own a shotgun.

Hell just this weekend I shot a glock 18 fully auto with a shoulder stock. Makes you feel like the bad guy in a 90's action movies.

I think that proper age-appropriate firearms safety should be taught to every child. If we live in a society that sees firearm ownership as a right, then everyone should know how to exercise it properly. I was taught both this and basic marksmanship in high school, and I still enjoy target practice at the range from time to time. It can be quite enjoyable and quite challenging as a sport.

When I was much younger than that, I did not know how to handle them properly, which could have resulted in tragedy. Case in point, both my younger sister and I found a pistol when visiting my grandfather in about the third grade or so. Our parents were not in the room at the time. Had we picked it up like any other toy, we could've ended up on the 6pm news simply because we don't know any better. In hindsight, we should have been taught what to do in that situation as early as possible.

I can't believe no one has said, "you'll shoot your eye out."

Times change, when I grew up, it wasn't unusual for a kid to have a rifle in his school locker for a marksmanship class after school. Now we get kids suspended for plastic knives. I might mention that there were no kids shooting kids or, anyone else then either.

I think teaching kids to respect weapons of all kinds is important. Shielding children from some tools because of the insanity of a few is foolish at best and tragically stupid at worst.

Just wondering..

Would playing a lot point-fps games on the Wii improve your shooting skills?

Highly encouraged. In fact they really should teach gun safety in school at an early age, if the parents have a problem with that let them opt out (and by doing so putting their kids in danger). Have a revolver, handgun, pump shotgun and a bolt rifle. Teach them the workings of all and how to load/unload. But overall hammer in the 4 rules of firearms into their brain.
