Its an excellent idea to teach safe gun handling skills, provided you do it safely and the teacher doesn't pass on bad habits. I recommend doing it at a range or somewhere similar so you can follow up the lesson with some shooting as well. A lot of people underestimate a weapon until they actually shoot it and realize just what it can do.

It is a very responsible thing to do. Everyone in my family attended hunters safety at a young age(10-12), so we learned how to properly handle firearms.

This, just ease her into it so he/she doesn't get face bashed from recoil.

Reminds me of this video.

Heh my friends son, who is 7, has only been shooting .22 with us, and we asked him a couple weeks ago if he wanted to try shooting an XD .40. So he goes up to shoot, holds it pretty well, pulls the trigger, and bang right into his face. He drops the mag and empties the chamber and turns around and he goes "was that supposed to happen?" We rofled so hard. Tough kid, that shit woulda hurt.

okay here is a crazy thought coming from old school up bringing. I am afraid that one day when he gets into a fight after knowing how to handle a gun he would use it.

This is why you keep it locked up well. Anyone who plans on using a gun to hurt someone will know how to pull a trigger. Teaching them gun safety helps them in normal cases.

ALWAYS keep guns properly locked and away from anyone but YOURSELF.

Do you mean to say as a young child, young adult he will be always carrying? Or he might steal one and shoot somebody?

I think he means that he might try to get one to shoot someone. If you're worried about this happening you maybe also need to teach your kid about having strong morals.

No cons, it is a good idea IMO to know how to properly handle a gun. If you plan on taking him shooting, it is better he knows what the heck he is doing rather than just pulling a trigger.

Maybe it's my cultural background but I find it amazing that you actually skip the whole part where a good idea is NOT to promote GUN use but instead to teach a child a proper method of handling a GUN as if it's socially acceptable. Hilarious, outrageous and quite simply, extraordinary. I really do value our differences in morality and rationale and I'm not saying you're wrong but I think you should all put your thinking caps on a bit and brainstorm about how you can contribute to society instead. I feel like we're living in the Wild West in a civilization that needs positive social progression.

Now I'm confused. Nobody here condoned gun use, only teaching the proper safety skills. If you grow up in a household with firearms, it's only natural that you know how to properly handle them if for some reason you were in that sort of situation. If you keep a firearm near where you sleep, like most firearms owners do, and your son/daughter walked in, you would want him/her to know how to respect it and what not to do. Otherwise you get shot by your kid accidentally like we've heard in the news.

You should move to a foreign country where you don't have to worry about guns in our society. You're the kind of person who would shit a brick if you saw me walking around open carrying.

Guns are neither good nor evil. Removing them from society, however, would be a complete tragedy. There are plenty of fun things you can do with a gun that doesn't involve endangering another's life. I imagine that because the OP obviously owns a gun, he probably finds a lot of enjoyment going out to a shooting range, or shooting clay pigeons.

Where are you from? Just wondering, because out here in the western united states, owning a gun is perfectly normal and acceptable.

I feel like is American to exercise the rights granted to us in the Bill of Rights. Shooting a gun is no different than speaking your mind.

You "progressives" really are amazing. You preach tolerance, understanding, and acceptance...as long as they share your views. As soon as someone does something that doesn't fit into your world view, you become the exact opposite of what you preach.

I condone gun use... Just saying. You can have a lot of fun with a gun without killing something. (Ok, killing something can be a lot of fun to. So long as you are hunting legally and not leaving the meat to rot, I don't have a problem with that either.)
