Gun sales up, murder rate down in 2009

I'm sure this is purely coincidental ;), but Gun Sales are way up and the murder rate has dropped 7.2%.

So, in my opinion, guns are good and deter crime. When you make committing crimes more dangerous, the perpetrator may decided to not commit crimes.

I'd like to thank President Obama for inadvertently lowering the crime rates in America.

Gun sales were way up because idiots thought that Obama would somehow ban firearms altogether.
I'm sure the gun shops and dealers were loving the business though.
I know the Wal-Marts around here STILL have ammo shortages, it's completely asinine.

That is a pretty dramatic drop in violent crime. Tough to say if it's directly related to all the states that loosened gun laws and also signed castle doctrine legislation. With the economy the way it is crime is supposed to rise, not drop.

While I would stop short of contributing most of the violent-crime drop to increased gun sales, I am happy to see Americans arming themselves to protect their families and that we are having fewer murders.

According to FBI statistics homicide has been either flat or dropping for the past 4-5 years; I'm equally surprised given the economy. However, my position on any gun control statistic whether used for pro or con purposes I think there is never sufficient control to make statistical sense out of the numbers.

He could never ban them altogether.... but he did have a track record from Illinois indicating that he is serious about gun control. The herd mentality took over and gun sales went through the roof. I just hope all the people buying guns are taking safety classes as well.

The people most likely to murder probably got stimulus money.

Correlation != causation.

This will work until 5 seconds from now, when someone else starts a thread saying "___, therefore ____."

The violent crime trend has lowered in the last 20 years. Even if you can show me that the percentage of people owning a gun went up over that entire span (which I'm doubting), it still wouldn't be enough to make a claim.

But violent criminals in prison consistently say they avoid committing crimes where the citizens are armed or carrying. Over and over, time and time again, more gun ownership and the ability to carry lowers crime. And I absolutely could easily google to show that firearm ownership has risen significantly in the last 20 years as states rapidly have ended their gun control laws. It's really common sense as to why, just think like a criminal.

Would you rather rob/attack somebody who must be unarmed according to state/city laws or somebody who might legally be armed and proficient with a deadly weapon?

How about breaking into somebody's home to commit violent acts or robbery knowing the homeowner must face a self defense or duty to retreat scenario vs. a home where the homeowner is legally allowed to shoot you dead for just being in the house (castle doctrine) and cannot be held civilly or criminal liable for killing you?

Why would anyone want to ban guns? What do you do when a couple of crooks break into your house and start raping your daughter? Wait for the cops to come? Hahahaha.

I have a p22, and it seems to me it has a threaded barrel. The gun came with some fake "silencer" (which is useless). Is there a different model for CA with a different barrel, or is there some weird distinction between a barrel that is threaded and a "threaded barrel?"

CA is one of the "funny" states with whacked out gun laws. No thread barrels in CA and muzzle breaks have to be permanently attached. There's other restrictions as well like magazine size, collapsible stocks and "that's an evil looking black rifle".

Oh, and they can carry, just unloaded.:hmm: What are they going to do? Throw it at the bad guy?

Not to dampen the celebratory mood but I think in 2010 most urban centers are seeing a double-digit (percentage-wise) increase in homicides.

And what is more alarming is that the majority of homicides now go unsolved.

This most likely is due to a shift away from 'crimes of passion' where a suspect is readily identifiable to drug-related violence, sheer stupidity and revenge killings.

I now return you to this fallacy of a thread.

Yes it's because of guns...

The murder rate in the US is FAR above countries of similar wealth, but that have much tighter gun control for example Germany has 10 times LESS homicides than the US.

You didn't just make that up did you? What study is this based on?

Not making it up. I forget what survey/study it is from though, they interviewed a lot of prisoners about if they changed their habits after a state passed carry permits.

a generation ago, poor people would sit out in the street and cause trouble because they were bored as a result of being unemployed and broke.

now, poor people sit inside their houses and play their xbox.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo should collectively be given a nobel peace prize.
