Gun safety fail - Cop shoots self in face

Check out this genius.

Police Chief John Mooney said 31-year-old Officer Kevin Wilkins from Atlantic City was trying to put a rubber sleeve on the grip of his pistol as he sat in his patrol car.

He had removed the ammunition clip, but was struck in the face by the round in the chamber when the gun accidentally discharged.

Yup, this genius was pointing a gun at his face with a round in the chamber. Natural selection be a harsh mistress.

It didn't accidentally discharge, somebody had their finger on the bang button, aka the trigger.

And yeah, he broke just about every safety rule there.

That's a damn idiotic way to die. I thought they at least showed police officers a few rules of thumb before sending them out on the streets with deadly weapons. How the fuck do you make that mistake?

My initial guess would be suicide. When I was a cop this subject would come up every once in a while. If cops kill themselves, they set it up to make it look like an "accident" and the department will pretend that it is as well.

Is there a legitimate need to point the gun at your face while performing the operation of installing a rubber sleeve on the grip? If not, I'm going with the suicide hypothesis. While I'm not a gun owner, I would think it's pretty much instinctive to always check for a round in the chamber; am I correct about this?

Its more of an honor thing. They are trying to protect the family. I've seen it with a guy in the Army that killed himself.

Yeah, that's kinda how I meant it. Protect the guy's reputation, honor and the family's well being (death benefits, pensions, etc.. being a part of that).

I find it hard to believe a trained cop could be that careless. As much as I hate to say it suicide seems much more likely.

why would he take the clip out if it was suicide?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_gunshot_suicide

One particular case has been documented from Australia. In February 1995, a man committed suicide on parkland in Canberra, Australia. He took a pump action shotgun and shot himself in the chest. The load passed through the chest without hitting a rib, and went out the other side. He then walked fifteen meters, reloaded, leaned the shotgun against his throat, and shot his throat and part of his jaw. Breathing through this gunshot-inflicted tracheotomy, he reloaded, walked 136 meters to a hill slope, lay down on the slope, held the gun against his chest with his hands and operated the trigger with his toes. This shot entered the thoracic cavity and demolished the heart, killing him.

wow, I have never handled a gun before, but one rule of thumb I would probably go by at all times is to never point the gun at myself, or anywhere I would not want it to shoot, even if I know it's empty. You just, never know.

It's like when I'm doing electrical and I go turn off the breaker, I STILL check, and check again, that it's dead before doing the work. The final check is often a finger check, after using the multi meter. When potential danger can happen, there's no such thing as being too careful, especially when it's very simple precautions.

I hate the insensitive comments here and I am really sorry for his fiance, father and three siblings for their loss.

RIP.

Meh, 150,000 people die every day.

To make it look like an accident. Our saying was that you would take all your cleaning supplies out and maybe even disassemble a few other firearms before you blew your brains out.
