I actually just purchased and installed a Barska biometric gun safe for my wife, and we are both very happy with it. We each have both of our index fingers and thumb prints stored in it, no combinations or keys involved. Very easy to open in the dark, well built, I recommend them.

Home defense pistols are inside along with Surefire light, spare mags and speedloaders and a blade. There is enough space in it that my wife could put a box of jewelry in the back too, which is great as I don't want her stuff in my other safe meant for long guns and ammo.

This is what we have:

http://www.sentrysafe.com/HDC/Home_Defense_Center

home_defense_center_hdc11e-tfb.jpg

It's in my closet next to our bed and houses the shotgun and 9mm. I might put the 9mm in the night stand next to us while we sleep at night and then transfer it to the safe in the morning, but I've been hesitant to do so in fear of forgetting one morning and leaving a loaded gun within easy reach of a 3 year old.

We also have the benefit of hurricane impact windows and two very large dogs, so my hope is that if anything ever happened, we'd have enough time to know it was happening.

I have a simple 10 or 12 gun (though I don't see how you'd fit more than 7 or 8 in there unless they were BB guns) safe that I use to store my long guns and ammo. I have a handgun with a loaded mag next to it in my nightstand, but I also live alone.

But the question you asked is something I've wondered if I had a kid/family so I figured I'd post anyway.

I will share a bit of personal experience with you. When I was a kid some of the other kids in my neighborhood were hanging out together in one boy's house. They found a gun and one of them got killed. My advice is don't have a gun in a house with a kid unless it is absolutely necessary. And it usually isn't necessary.

Whatever. He just needs to get a safe.
I have a lock box in our bedroom that I keep open when I'm sleeping, when I'm not in there it is locked and I always have the key on me.
All my other guns live in a 1,000lb safe in the garage.

I will share a bit of personal experience with you. Last week, I (personally) was watching the news, and I saw this story about how a bunch of people got killed in a movie theater. My advice is don't go out to see movies unless it is absolutely necessary. And it usually isn't necessary.

I have a basic locking gun safe in the basement for my long guns and a Gun Vault safe under my bed for my 9mm. The battery lasts for years, so I just replace it once a year when I do my smoke detectors. I think there is a model that has an AC power supply, but I'd rather not be dependent on having power to get access to it.

QFT, listen to the words of Jeeebus

I have a Cannon fireproof gun safe

works great for guns and keeping important documents safe...each night if I haven't been carrying I move my .45 to the top of the safe until morning, but my oldest is only 2 and can't get to it yet, I'll have to evaluate other options once he's old enough to get to it until he can be taught to respect it properly

How much did you pay for that, Jeebus? I've been looking for something smaller for the bedroom away from my main safe (everyone mentions back problems when I mention moving it upstairs). I'm seeing it for around $300, and for that much, I always feel like spending another $200 will get me a bigger version from Costco.

lulz From my experience, if you have a gun in your house and kids that are old enough to find it, they will. Most of them don't understand the devastation they can cause. They want to play Cops and Robbers. I'm far from anti-2nd ammendment, just stating that it's a very dangerous game to play having a lethal weapon in the house with a child.

Sorry to wrinkle your panties.

If children aren't taught anything about them sure...but that's a parenting failure. It's a right and a responsibility, heavy on the responsibility.

And i wouldn't be putting "lulz" in with a child playing with a gun, it shows a juvenile attitude that's not conducive to the gravity of the situation

He also needs to be absolutely anal about keeping his guns 100% secure until every member of his household is a responsible adult. It only takes being lax for a few minutes...

What are the odds of actually needing the gun for self defense versus the odds of some kid getting hold of it and accidentally killing someone?

I would get rid of the gun, or at least keep it tucked somewhere safe. If someone breaks in, too bad. Let them have the damn TV or whatever. Better than a dead kid.

100,000 - 2,500,000 defensive gun uses annually. 600 accidental shooting deaths annually. Guess that pretty much negates your second paragraph.

damn it all...stop bringing facts into the gun debate!

Guns are evil and they kill millions of Americans accidentally each year

Cool story bro. Did you read the childish remarks I got in response to my post? I figured I would speak on their level.

 Not seeing any childish remarks, however you make it sound like that is what you were gunning for since your post would have to be first before their responses;)

I think it was probably in that range. Needed something that would fit in a closet corner, was quiet, and would open quickly. Works great for its intended purpose, though if I had additional long guns it could become a problem.

what kind of stats is that? 100K to 2.5M is a huge spread.
That's a pretty big range... what the hell?
There's no reliable statistics to go on gathered by anyone, so it's a huge mathematical guess and while the gun rights groups like the bigger number even if you want to discount it greatly the lower is pretty much beyond doubt...well for anyone who isn't just spouting BS
