I said about time, but in my honest opinion it is way over due. From what I've seen, socket 1156's HSF situation is dire. It's no wonder Lynnfield isn't that hot on the market. (heh) Intel is finally rectifying this nonsense w/ Gulftown next year, but tha'll be a bit too little too late, IMO. HSF market for socket 1366 is pretty much established by now.

If anything, Intel should include better heat sinks for existing socket 1156 and 1366 CPUs, so that users can ease the pain of platform transition.

Lynnfield might be doing better right now if Win7 wasn't on the horizon or if it was already available in retail...with it being "in the wings" the whole PC upgrade cycle is probably seeing a lull on annualized basis at the moment.

not bad looking cooler, especially if that is the stock one.

Likely means TJmax is going to be low, so we'll have to work all the harder to cool and keep volts down to avoid throttling.

Yea, the HSF was first shown at Fall IDF few days ago.

According to the presentation the cooler exceeds performance of Arctic Cooler 7 Freezer Pro/Cooler Master Hyper TX2/Zalman CNPS9500AT/Zalma CNPS9700CT, while meeting weight/dimension/noise/shipping standards for Socket 1366.

If you can't see it: It's a tower heatsink, looks like every other tower out there. :p

For the price that Intel is going to charge for these things, you would think that they could afford to ship a decent heatsink. Finally.

That's quite rough looking - I'm sure the finished product would be more refined and efficient with a shroud. Especially with that fin spacing. It will not take much dust to clog that!

Even so I never use the stock coolers. I did for a while on my FX60 until the Tuniq Tower came in. Ironically that was a heatpipe cooler and quite capable too.

I actually held off on installing my Phenom for a couple of days until my Zerotherm came in because I didn't want to have to deal with wiping the stock cooler goo off of it.

a $1500 CPU should come with a $20 heatsink.

that they've gotten away with their $5 heatsinks for so many years is pathetic, but yeah, this is probably tjmax related.

It probably didn't even cost them that much. :p
Their designs weren't very innovative.
They've actually done alot of scaling back on heatsinks in some generations (Socket A heatsinks got smaller and smaller) to save money (I assume)
