I always loved Dreamtheater's guitar work. Dreams and dreaming was the only album I really liked though

People who *automatically* dismiss this type of music tend to take on an air of superiority, as though they have graduated to a higher plane of musical interest, when in reality they are more ignorant of music than they understand themselves to be. They simply cannot recognize the musicality in this, and cannot differentiate between the good stuff and the "wankers."

You are the one now taking on an air of superiority. Musicality, like so many other things, is a matter of taste. Personally, I don't "see" the musicality in that solo; to me it completely lacks soul. However, that doesn't make me ignorant, nor would I somehow be more enlightened if I did. It simply isn't my taste.

if you don't like that then you probably don't like metal, meaning you probably wouldn't like the OP's video either. the drums don't sound much different on the entire awake album.

king diamond is the king, no matter what anyone says.

I love metal, but I still don't like dream theater most of the time (though it's usually just the vocals I can't stand)

We don't all think the same you know... quit lumping groups together

i'm not lumping groups together, i just don't get it - the style of drumming on the video i linked (and that's a real drummer, not a machine) is pretty much par for the course for 95% of metal bands out there. drum triggers became popular in metal music in the mid 80's with the rise of death metal bands, you're not actually hearing the bass drum but rather an electronic sample of one that is actuated through the board when the drummer "triggers" it by hitting the drum. the tone is different than modern metal bands, but the style is pretty much the same.

and then there's today's blast beats. THAT is machine gun drumming.
