My friend's parents went out of town for the week, and so he invited me over to spend the night. When it was getting late, we both took a bunch of Vivarin pills and then we stayed up all night and he tought me to play some chords on the guitar. It was really cool and now I want to learn the Guitar. I have an accustic one that really sucks but I want to get an Electric one. I'm kind of on a tight budget too since I'm still in high school. (about $200 max) Does anyone have any suggestions about brands, modals, places to get them and stuff like that?

You should learn on the acoustic, then buy a crappy electric, crappy amp, then a nice electric, then a nice amp like I did 😀

Go with something that feels good on your hands. I went cheap with my first one....big mistake.

OMG! EXACTLY what i did!


Pick up a cheap Epiphone or Strat knockoff, and a cheap practice amp.

I would recommend a Les Paul Special II or SG of the Epiphone variety, or one of the Squire strats.

How many of these threads are there now?

Learn on the crappy guitar... I've been playing for 6 years, and my 3 guitars don't even total $1000 and I am still happy with them 🙂. The sound is 90% you... it's sort
of like a golfer who blames everything on his golf clubs, goes out and buys a $2000 set of irons and still can't break a 100 🙂

Wait until you become good, then you can appreciate why those expensive guitars cost more. Unless you have a couple hundred bucks to blow.

I don't want to learn on my accustic because I like rock music and it doesn't have cool things like overdrive on it. My accustic sounds like the kind of guitar that a country singer would play.

Hmm... i kinda disagree...... all my life i have wanted the sound, the awe inspiring crunchy sound, that only a vintage marshall can give me...... so for me the sound is more like 40% 😉

For real though, you should learn all you can on a crappy guitar first, and you can also learn how to keep intonation good, etc etc. and its usually relatively easy to fix on cheapies(cause sometimes they weren't that all great to begin with 🙂 )

dude, believe me, theres no shame.

the main stuff i like to play is thrash/metal stuff(metallica, megadeth, things of that nature)........i learned on an acoustic i got for $20 from a friend who needed the money....

You have to start somewhere.

I actually haven't played my electric in over a year! My classical guitar is way more challenging (also more rewarding). I sort of like the tonal uniqueness of crappy guitars though 🙂. I think we have just different frame of minds I guess.... the sound has never been something I wanted to buy, it's been something I would want to call my own (still searching for it though 😛)

In no way am i dissing acoustics... my father has a SWEET (not to mention expensive) acoustic, and it just sounds so, clean, i guess is the word....

I just like the sound of the guitar and the challenge to play something clean... I always noticed that if I spent a lot of time on
my crappy accoustic, when I went to my electric and turned on the distortion I sounded pretty sweet 🙂 (but the distortion hid
all my sloppiness). I always have great respect for bands who can play their loud distorted music on an accoustic without
losing anything (Alice in Changes, and Collective Soul come to mind).
