guitar suggestions

Wanting to pick up a new stick as I sold my strat last year.

Not wanting to spend a whole lot. Thought about picking up an ibanez but unsure.

My music interests are pretty open-minded. I like to play just about everything.

Thought about picking up this :

http://www.musiciansfriend.com...ric-Guitar?sku=518872X

But was wondering if anyone knows if there are fretboard dots on the top of the neck?

I don't really have a problem findings my frets but was just curious...

Any other suggestions?

It all depends on what style you like. I have an epiphone gold top les paul model that is pretty good, but it is still sort of a noob guitar. I am a big fan of the strats myself.

I loved my strat but I've always like Ibanez too. I'm more into playing heavier music than I am classical/blues so I think I'm wanting to try an Ibanez this round.

Get that one kind that has strings on it an' stuff.

This should be a cliche thread by now: "I want to buy a guitar but don't want to spend too much."

Also, Fritzo, please note that I was seeking opinions about the certain guitar I linked in the OP. I'm mainly trying to figure out the fret board if it has dots on the top part. I have enough knowledge to wing the rest.

Oooo..nice comeback Potsie :)

Anyway, with lower end/mid end guitars, beware of anything that says "<part> made by <famous manufacturer>" as these are almost always the weak part of the guitar. In this case the "made by Duncan" humbuckers. I did some checking for you and they're your typical underwound cheapee pickups (Epiphone's pickups have the same issues- underwinding the coils results in a muddy sound). Since this is a mid end "blemished" model, the build quality will probably be pretty decent (I'm a big fan of scratch and dent stuff). Since you're into multiple kinds of music, these would be good replacement pickups:

'59 SD PAF's

Ibenez puts dot's on top of the fretboard when they're not on the board itself.

I wonder what tomorrow's "I want a guitar but don't want to pay too much" poster will want. :D

I've got an Ibanez RG320 as a high school graduation present (2001) and love it. Fretboard is great, easy to play, it sounds awesome. The ONLY thing I don't care for is the floating Floyd Rose Tremolo bridge.... I fucking hate that thing when it comes to changing strings and tuning (say, drop it down half a step) the guitar. The music I play doesn't require any tremolo either. I may just see if I can replace that bridge (anyone know anything about this, btw?). Overall it's a great guitar though.

Hey, my posts are precious, and each and every one is being compiled into a "Best Of ATOT" book.

I have an Ovation Acoustic/Electric from Musicians friend. Its made by Celebrity. I think mine was about four hundred a few years back, and there are even a cheaper ones than that. I do believe they also have more expensive versions. While I rarely play anymore, I still love the instrument. It sounds great, and the hard plastic back cant be beat.

p.s. i see now that your looking at an electric. but thats ok :)

Just to be a typical ATOT smarty pants, Celebrity is the model of Ovation (my first guitar in 1982 was an Ovation Celebrity). It's their starter model, and I can say my 26+ year old one is still playable (it needs frets badly though- not worth replacing them). They use a rounded resin back to project sound out of the soundhole. I'm not convinced it works as Ovations tend to have a "tinny" sound, but the sound happens to work with singing, so it works.

I've been wanting this for two years, but my wife won't let me pull the trigger:

Yummy

Fritzo is right. If you have to ask what type of guitar you want, then you really should not be spending that much on the guitar. You see, instruments are in the ear of the beholder. To some, it sounds horrible, to thers, it is pure bliss (case inpoint : Fender strats and Gibson Les Pauls). You kind of prove it also with your request of an Ibenez. nice guitar, but not the most versitile...especially to a person who has to ask about it.

FOr $500, you really can't expect a great guitar unless you start doing your own things to it.

What about that other guitar you wanted. Was it the Jimmy Page guitar? You know, the one you said you would get laid if you walked down the street with it;).

i'd vote for the Ibanez you posted, but I haven't played it so it's hard to truly put my vote in.

Go to a guitar store and spend some time playing around. If you only have $500 to spend, don't blow it. Make sure you spend sometime and make a good choice.

Ibanez makes quality, inexpensive guitars.

Honestly, I'd say look around on eBay for a used Carvin. Carvin, hands down, makes the best guitars for the money. Mostly because they are bought direct from carvin and don't have middle man markups.

A new carvin though, can cost over a grand. They aren't cheap, just great values for the money spent. A $1000 carvin will compare with any other $3000-$4000 guitar you will find at the store.

I was too lazy to go get $20000 out of the bank.

I also read that Jimmy Page took the #1 out of that series (one he hand picked) and put it up for auction for charity. Nice.

Hey, there you go! I picked up this Nashville Power Tele blemished for $500...it's one of my favorite guitars. It Mexican made, but has American pickups, and an active piezo picked (so it can sound like an acoustic). I do a mean version of Zeppelin's "Thank You" on it :)

OP, I think the Ibby you linked to would be pretty sweet. It's a simple guitar without many moving parts you'd find in a floyd rose etc. At that price, it's better to go for a hard tail than something with a cheap floating bridge that won't stay in tune. The tuneomatic bridges are very good for sustain as well.

That said, I'd play the actual guitar before buying it - I wouldn't recommend buying a guitar online. In my experience, blind purchasing a guitar is a real hit or miss. I look for guitars that have great natural resonance - 1 in 30 guitars of the same model actually have that kind of response. Go to a local shop and play every guitar until you find the one that has notes that jump out at you without plugging it in. The rest can be controlled.

Try this

First off, go to a guitar store and play a lot of guitars. Seriously. You might find there are things you like about a $400 guitar that you don't like about a $500 one.

Second, go for something with a nice body. Don't worry too much about pickups or tuners as you can easily upgrade those a few months down the line if you find you're playing enough that they annoy you.
