Guitar strap question

I just recently purchased this guitar from Guitar Center:

Playing it was a great experience, a huge upgrade from my Starcaster by Fender (the one they sell at Target). After taking it home, there's one problem. The guitar has 2 strap buttons, one at the butt of the guitar, and one on the backside of the guitar right underneath the neck.

So after hooking the strap up to it and wearing it... the damn thing points literally DOWNWARD. I literally have to hold the neck up with my hand to be able to play it.

Is this normal or is this how SG guitars are designed?

Gibsons have horrible ergonomics. They're very neck heavy when using the default strap mounts. I always put the strap on my Epiphone folk style to keep the neck up(bottom button used, other end tied to the headstock)

I can't fathom how that's possible. I have a few Gibsons, one with the button behind the neck. It sounds like your strap isn't long enough? Try adjusting the length. The SG is light as fuck compared to the lesters... shouldn't be hard to angle right.

With the Strat, the guitar/strap would hold itself and it'd be angled correctly.

With the SG, I have to hold the neck up and angle it with my left hand. If I don't hold it with my left hand, the thing points downward.

I will play around with the strap a bit more to see what I can do.

The Epiphone SG is notorious for being neck heavy. They are no where near as balanced as the Gibsons.

That's just how SG's are. I have been playing an Epi SG for almost three years, and you just have to deal with it. It isn't hard to deal with. Your right arm should help hold the body down, but if you take your arm off, the neck will fall.

Is that safe for the headstock?

Sure, it won't hurt anything. I wouldn't hang it on the wall like that, but for playing it'll be fine. That could harm technique if you do weird things with the guitar. I could see it getting in the way with tapping and other unorthodox techniques, but you'd have to try it yourself to see if it'll work.

The Stratocaster is the best guitar shape ever made. The design was well thought out, and more than 50 years later it hasn't been surpassed.
