Take your guitar along to a guitar store and ask them if you can try it with some of the amps. I'm sure they'll let you. Then you can make your own mind up as to which suits you.
Personally, I believe valve amps sound better and warmer. The downside of valves is that they are more expensive, and also require more maintainence (I'm having to shell out some cash soon to get my Fender Valve amp fixed). Transistors have a more 'artificial' sound to them, although they still sound good and should suit you fine if you're only going to be using it for practice in your bedroom or a garage.
Btw - what kind of danny is it? If it's a 57 in good shape, it could be worth a fair amount of money..
