I have a 1957 DanElectro that belonged to my dad. I want a practice amp, I don't want to sink a lot of cash into it as it will only be for practice. Any suggestions?

Just pick up a Fender Champ or a Pignose.

 

Go to pawn shops. Don't buy anything new if it's just going to be a little practice amp, get the most for your money.

You can get an Fender tube amp for a little bit of nothing. Peaveys ain't bad either for a practice amp. Just find a "combo amp" with one 12" speaker, that should be plenty. I would also get one with reverb, makes it sounds 'mo better. Some of the little solid state Crate amps are fun and a lot lighter than a tube amp.

Bobtist, in my experience pawn shops have been really expensive. I think your best bet would be to check out some websites like Musician's Friend or Sam Ash and look for special deals there.

Take your guitar along to a guitar store and ask them if you can try it with some of the amps. I'm sure they'll let you. Then you can make your own mind up as to which suits you.

Personally, I believe valve amps sound better and warmer. The downside of valves is that they are more expensive, and also require more maintainence (I'm having to shell out some cash soon to get my Fender Valve amp fixed). Transistors have a more 'artificial' sound to them, although they still sound good and should suit you fine if you're only going to be using it for practice in your bedroom or a garage.

Btw - what kind of danny is it? If it's a 57 in good shape, it could be worth a fair amount of money..

It is a 1957 U1, it is in awesome shape, my Dad never learned to play it, he bought it new. It has the case which is in fair shape. It is black with a white pick gaurd.
