Sam Smith Taddy Porter > Guinness.

Oh, and even a local Nashville brew is better. Not even sure if they distribute this stuff. Blackstone St. Charles Porter > Guinness... but definitely not as good as the SS Taddy.

Yes. SA Honey Porter.

This. SA Honey is the bomb.

Utenos is a great porter too.

I've become a recent convert to Baltic style porters. If you can find them in teh states, they're usually pretty cheap.

Yet another beer that I'll have to watch for. Thank FSM that Binny's carries so many micro brews right by my house 🙂

Are you anywhere near Sammy's? The only one I know of is on North Avenue behind the BB and Whole Foods in Chicago. They carry Utenos as well as a few Latvian beers, which can be had for $1.50/pint+ bottles. incredibly cheap for the quality, malty, hoppy, generally 6-9% abv.

Also, West Lakeview Liquors on Addison is one of the higher rated sellers in the world, actually. I think #8 on a recent international poll, surrounded by some of the larger beer emporiums you'd find in Belgium. pretty good for such a tiny place. They have a great website and offer interesting weekend seminars. And will order just about anything, on top of carrying a very diverse selection. They'll carry some of the more extreme and rare dogfish head productions when they are available, like Midas Touch.

Hehe, I have a bottle of Midas Touch sitting in my fridge from Binny's. I'll have to look into West Lakeview Liquors though. It's not to far away, 30 minutes or so.

 I've even begged another ATer to drive me there when my car was on the fritz (last year superbowl, I think 😀) Though we were only ~5 min drive.

I've been drinking Spaten Optimator recently. Cheapest big bottle at the local Safeway, and it's also really good (~$2.20 per bottle)

Optimator is neither a porter nor a stout, it's a german doppelbock. It's hard to compare that to a guiness, because it is a lager and guiness is an ale.

I recently did a make your own six pack with some porters and they were all better than guiness. I got:

Liberty Porter
Sierra Nevada Porter
Bell's Porter
Sam Adam's Honey Porter

and two other beers (Liberty Christmas Ale and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale).

KT

Not fan of the shakespear for some reason, but I do like their chocolate stout. And I usually don't like chocolate stouts.

Aren't you the one that bought that Three Floyd's Dark Lord that one time?

love hearing my hometown brewery 🙂

I have an '08 darklord in my cabinet at home, aging away. Can't wait to try this years.

Also, The Abyss from Deschutes is amazing if you can find it. So is Speedway Stout from Alesmith.

Three Floyd's also makes a milk stout - Moloko. It's extremely creamy. Ten Fidy from oskar blues is a nice thick imperial stout/porter as well.

Guinness merely skirts the surface of the vast porter and stout market that exists. It's the type of beer that you settle for when you go to a bar or club with your friends who have no taste in beer and you get it because there's nothing else worth consuming. It's the type of beer that you get at the local 7-Eleven at late night because the real stores that sell real beer are already closed.

While it's good in its own right, it doesn't compare to what is out there.

Go back to GO, do not collect $200, try again.

Why do people compare a Micro to a Macro??? You cannot compare them. It's like comparing a local burger joint to a national chain. Two totally different birds.

listen to this man. His username clearly indicates years of experience 😉

Exactly how I feel about Guinness.

The OP said that Guinness makes the best Porter and Stout. This is clearly false.

What's the problem?

Guinness does make a great oatmeal stout that is rather difficult to come by: Foreign Extra. very tasty. I know you can get it in Italy, but not in Ireland. I think it's distributed through their factory in Holland, or Denmark...or wherever that one is.

Not sure. I know it's in the Sam Adams Brewmaster Collection. I got the 6 pack Brewmaster's Variety Pack (not sure if there is a 12pk of that though), which includes 2 of each of: Honey Porter, Black Lager, and Irish Red.
All three extremely delicious. 🙂

For that, I know it is in Kroger and Giant Eagle. I assume it'll probably be in any grocery store that has a large selection of beer, and any kind of beer/liquor store that stocks a variety of beer. It's becoming difficult to NOT find Sam Adams basically anywhere, short of gas stations which don't always stock beers of smaller companies.
Though, I haven't found a 6pk or 12pk of JUST the Honey Porter, but if I ever do, I'm buying it. I'd guess it'd be at any store that really stocks a TON of beers. But as far as Sam Adams at places like grocery stores, they tend to keep to whatever the Seasonal brew is, Sam Adams Light, Boston Lager, and in the winter sometimes the Holiday Variety Pack, as well as apparently the Brewmaster's 6pk.

It depends on what you're looking for. I love Guinness. I only ever drink with friends in a relaxed setting, so it's the perfect beer. It's medium-mild, yes, but it's certainly not "watery" or "bland"

If you want something that will knock you on your ass then why are you drinking beer and not shots of top shelf whiskey?

Edit: Sierra Nevada Porter is NOT better than Guinness. Everyone on here seems to think that any other stout > Guinness. That is not the case; Guinness is average to good.

Have you had other Stouts or Porters? I'd definitely say it has this certain issue to it, most easily described as 'watery'. It just doesn't have the feeling of 'weight' to the taste or texture.

Oh, and everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm at this point venturing a guess that places Guinness at nearly the bottom of Stouts and Porters. I have quite a short list of experience with Stouts and Porters, but each one I've had has been worlds better than Guinness (and when I say Guinness, I mean draft at a bar).

Guinness is much better in Ireland. However i like Beamish and Murphys better. I wish i was able to have an O Haras when i was over there.

Sierra Nevada Porter is head, shoulders, knees, toes and about 40 feet of vertical elevation above Guinness.

what do u think is = or > Guinness?

What stouts have you had that you don't like as well as Guinness? To be fair, most of the beers mentioned in this thread are not irish stouts, which are light in body. So comparing an american stout or RIS is not quite fair. Guinness is also usually served on a nitro tap, which gives it an awesome look, but dulls the taste even more.

Where do yas get all these fancy beers? I am no connoisseur but I love to try new things. I highly doubt my local beer store up her in Ontario has anything remotely close to this. Are these micro breweries?
