Be prepared for a thick, hearty beer with lots of flavor :)

If you want to go lightly at first, try a balck and tan, that's Guiness stout and Bass Ale.

Maybe in your neck of the woods...

a real black and tan is Guinness and Smithwicks. Why sully the taste of Guinness with something like Bass???
a black and tan is Guinness mixed with any light beer in my book

Yea but,

yer a girl...

and i'd rather be drinking Labatt Bleu

Ahhh... yer one of thoooooose... :p

Do you live in Quebec by chance (haven't checked your profile), but I've noticed you use a lot of French spellings... No reason for asking, jsut curious..

That's like saying it's good to have 100s of cobra snakes in your house because it keeps mice out. Yea, it does keep mice out, but...

Indeed. And to that I will add: GUINNESS FOR STRENGTH. :D

Once I gave my neighbor a sip and she spit it out and complained it tasted like coffee... she then continued to drink her "Michelob" as I enjoyed my Guinness :)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm running out of my case of beer (I get about 1 every 8 months) and it's time for me to pick another one. I like Laugers. I think Yuengling is good, right now I"m trying Samuel Adams lager but I don't think it's as good. I like the deep rich flavor but not necessarily the bitterness. Any other laugers you recommend? Is Stout the even darker stuff? Any good Stouts you recommend?

Umm, if you want "deep, rich flavor, but not the bitterness", you'll love Guinness. And yes, Guinness is a stout.

[homer voice] Guinness, is there anything it can't do? [/homer voice] :)

I should also clarify, a black & tan is not "mixed" with anything. The Guinness is floated on top of the lighter beer, Bass is the way we get them here. Actually, if they don't have Bass and try to give me some light American beer, I won't drink it. Besides, Bass is made by the Guinness people, so that seems like the logical choice to me.

Also stouts and ales are made with top-fermenting yeast and made at warmer temperatures than lagers (bottom fermenting yeast) which changes the flavor characteristics.

Mmmm I need guinness.....or guinness extra stout.....or sam smith oatmeal stout....any stout really.

When you say top and bottom, are you refering to the actual location of the yeast within the brew?

Give Old Speckled Hen a try. It tastes similiar to Guinness but it looks more medium bodied, is good!

Hello,

I am a great fan of stout beers and I must say that the Guiness isn't one of my favourite. There are so many much better black/brown beers than the Guiness. For instance, just try one of these: Maredsus (Belgium), Chimay Blue (Belgium), Dragon Stout (Jamaica), Vondel (Belgium), McEwan's (Scotland) and the Storm King Stout (USA) (haven't tried this one, it's not availble in my area, but I read it was great! In fact, it gets a 4.5 out of 5 on BeerAdvocate).

BeerAdvocate is your best friend!
