This is really retarded. Peter Jackson was the only guy who could do it. This sucks.

Edit: it looks like Jackson is directing something Middle Earth related if not the Hobbit, and the other guy is doing the Hobbit.

They're both fat, so maybe that makes a good director.

Well, it's obvious he could at least appreciate the LotR universe, he made three stellar movies. While I disagreed with some of the adaptation of the movie, he made himself brilliant. What has the new guy done to show similar appreciation?

He wrote/directed Pan's Labyrinth, which was more about character and story than FX but was a phenom movie by any standard. Hellboy was all FX and they looked pretty good. If I had to pick one of them to do LOTR prior to PJ actually filming LOTR, I'd never have thought Jackson could have accomplished what he did.

sequel to 'The hobbit' weren't they the lord of the rings movies?

Yeah, I thought that too. From the article:
As part of the deal, Del Toro will relocate to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his production teams at Wingnut and WETA. He will direct the films back to back ? telling the story of "The Hobbit," and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first book in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Did Tolkein ever write about that period? Or did his son? I think New Line is more drooling over perceived profits and new product tie-ins. I guess someone bet on the housing market, lost their shirt, and is looking to make it all back.

Yes. There's no actual books covering the period, but Tolkein wrote a considerable amount of storyline for it. Some of which was actually in the LOTR books and left out or glossed over in the movies (like the 17 year time period between Bilbo's party and Frodo leaving the Shire).

Awesome. I like del Toro's movies and he's an excellent choice for director, and with Jackson at the helm the movie is sure to be consistent with LOTR. As for the sequel, not a bad idea. Of course they're milking it, but as long as they come up with a good story, I'm all for it. Maybe they can do something with Tom Bombadil in it.

Yeah his work with fantasy becoming real (ie Pan's Labyrinth) is great!

del Toro does excellent work. See Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphange and The Devil's Backbone. He's been writing and directing the fantasy/horror genre since he started and he always has good characters, good acting and good camera work in his movies. Besides, you do realize that Peter Jackson is executive producing the films, don't you? I'm sure the new movies won't be straying from the quality of work he's already done with LOTR.

The Hobbit was better than the Lord of the Rings, and del Toro is a damn fine director, so I'm looking forward to this.
