Guillermo del Toro to direct 'The Hobbit' and sequel

The first film based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book of the same name was confirmed by Jackson and Fran Walsh, executive producers of the films, as well as New Line Cinema's Toby Emmerich and Mary Parent, chairperson of MGM.

"We have long admired Guillermo's work and cannot think of a more inspired filmmaker to take the journey back to Middle-earth," Walsh and Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted 'The Hobbit' is in such trustworthy hands."

The hobbit is too short to do 2 parts. From what I hear, the first one is the hobbit, and the second is a sequel between the hobbit and lord of the rings, not based on a specific book.

Yeah, I thought that too. From the article:

As part of the deal, Del Toro will relocate to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his production teams at Wingnut and WETA. He will direct the films back to back ? telling the story of "The Hobbit," and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first book in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Did Tolkein ever write about that period? Or did his son? I think New Line is more drooling over perceived profits and new product tie-ins. I guess someone bet on the housing market, lost their shirt, and is looking to make it all back.

Awesome. I like del Toro's movies and he's an excellent choice for director, and with Jackson at the helm the movie is sure to be consistent with LOTR. As for the sequel, not a bad idea. Of course they're milking it, but as long as they come up with a good story, I'm all for it. Maybe they can do something with Tom Bombadil in it.

Yep. Most movies equal maybe 100-150 pages of a book. The Hobbit is approximately 300 pages.

One other item of interest regarding del Toro. I was just looking up his projects on IMDB and he's slated to do Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness for 2010 release. That's another movie we can look forward to.

Ian McKellen confirmed on his site he will reprise the role of Gandalf.[79] Andy Serkis also admitted, "I'd find it very hard to turn down [playing] Gollum again, as he's very much become a part of me."[80] Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, and Christopher Lee have said they would reprise their roles as Legolas, Aragorn, Galadriel, Frodo Baggins, and Saruman if they were required for either prequel.

I am excited.

IIRC, there is about a 60 year gap between the events which occurred in The Hobbit and the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring.

good to know they woudl be on board but the only role other then gandalf in the hobbit would be Elrond

Besides the $$$, I think they all want to vacation in New Zealand again.

Ya, pretty much. All these signs of support give me high hopes for a quality film.

They could just extend the hobbit out a bit by showing what Gandalf was doing while away from the party.

as for the 2nd movie they're planning, it will try to bridge the gap between hobbit and fellowship (i think this was mentioned above). it will be a new story based on all the existing related literature.

I'd rather they do the Hobbit as two films and then make another one that covers the time in-between, if they feel like they have to.
