I have a Guillemot/Hercules 3D Prophet SE video card. It uses the GeForce 256 SDR GPU.

The computer seems to run fine, and then suddenly it will crash. Either it freezes, or sometimes it completely reboots the machine. I have a hunch it's the video card but I suppose there's always the possibility of something else being the problem.

I notice the problem most frequently when I'm playing games. In Q3A, it usually exits the program and then reduces my resolution and colormap. In Sims, it either exits the game or freezes, forcing me to reboot. In UT, it usually quits with a "General Protection Fault" error, and in some other cases exits the game or freezes and forces reboot.

I've tried using the 5.22 and 3.77 drivers from the Guillemot/Hercules site, as well as the 5.22 nVidia reference drivers. I tried reinstalling Win98SE several times. I applied the UT420 patch. This problem just doesn't seem to go away. Could anyone please help?

This may be a heat problem. Playing QIII adds another 2C to my mainboard temp, and that's with a cooler running TNT Vidcard! It's possible that you need more capable case fans.

If you are using a VIA motherboard don't forget to get latest drivers especially there new AGP driver. You may have to flash your videocard BIOS. Also, try using AGP2x and disable Fastwrites.

Are you sharing any IRQs with your video card? (or your sound card)
