Altogether I put in about 40 hours on it and left with a level 11 necromancer/elementalist.

Its pretty and has some decent game elements but just couldnt hold my attention. I only put in so much time because I had purchased it and it doenst have a monthly fee.
The main campaign and story is OK, the in-between quests are the sort of run-and-fetch nonsense that I hated about Everquest. I also didnt think much of the empty game world. Compared to Oblivion and Morrowind the countryside is kind of barren. Compared to Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 the game is one giant ghost town. Way too much running to find another monster, another town, that one special crafting item.
Thats another thing I didnt like. Too much farming. If you dont farm you are behind the other players (like most MMO's). If you do farm you drag out the already slow storyline.

I do still have the game installed and I remember my password. Maybe I should load up and see if they added anything in the last 6 months.

OK I just loaded it up and there were some improvements. I got a pet as soon as I started, a little gay unicorn, but whatever, its there.
I noticed that not only does the game run smoother and faster but my character runs faster as well. I guess they got tired of all the complaints about it taking too long to run from point A to point B.

I just checked my inventory and I remembered what I was trying to do. I have the good elementalist helmet (All Seeing Eye, 30 armor) and the rest is all weak stuff (armor of 7 and mild energy abilities). I think I was trying to build up crafting goods so I could go right for the really good elementalist equipment and skip the mid-range crap.

Does anybody recall where I do that? Is it a special merhcant or a particular town? Can they all do stuff for my class or do I need to go someplace special?
Game is as beautiful and smooth as ever. I wish they had used this engine for Neverwinter Nights 2.

EDIT: WOW! I forgot how damn expensive everything was. I just bought some scales for a buttload of money so I could craft better armor, and the armor cost a buttload in addition to the crafting items. I had to sell a bunch of stuff just to get the last 50 gold needed. I got the pyromancers gloves. They dont bump my Fire skill but they do protect from fire and I need that while dealing with the Char.
Still need the better robes, leggings and boots. Thats gonna cost me 450 gold and a bunch of materials. I think I know why I left this game for so long.
For anyone who cares I equipped a couple of fire skills and a buttload of curses. I usually make them slow and soft and then blast the crap out of them. It seems to be working OK. One day I may read the Guild Wars forums and look at some effective combos.

Guild Wars Wiki was very helpful for me when I was playing. There was a lot of things I learned that I didn't know about at all before.

Yeah, crafting requires a lot of gold. And only a few things really sell for much gold (mostly dyes). But I guess once you get far enough into the game, you end up with a lot more gold. I was able to craft the best armor I could get at level 7 or so (even at level 11 now, nothing is better yet) since my buddy had a char on my account that was level 20 and had a ton of gold.

I've been playing this game since release almost 2 years ago. First off, the "unicorn" is a mini pet. Characters get a random mini pet on their birthday (character has existed for 1 year). They just added the options to display mini pets in towns, so they're value went up a bit. I don't keep up on mini pet prices, but you can probably sell the Kirin (Unicorn) for about 10k or more.

In Prophecies, just craft the armor in Ascalon and it will serve you well enough all the way through the desert missions. No need to waste money getting the mid level armor. Once you finish the desert, you can craft the highest AL armor in the game at Droknor's Forge. There are a lot more expensive armors, but the stats are the same. It's only different looks.

Each armor crafter in the game shows armor for your specific class only. There's no special elementalist crafter or warrior crafter. There are armor crafters in progressing orders of AL in Ascalon, Yak's Bend, Lion's Arch, Amnoon Oasis and Droknor's Forge. If you play through the game normally and salvage most of the drops, you should have enough materials needed for Droknor's armor when you get there. Might be a little short on gold though.

Pretty much any skill combo you come up with will work in the early areas. Generally rule of thumb, especiallty early on when you have few attribute points, is to specialize in one attribute line. So put all your points in fire magic and take all fire spells.

ya. if you're ele, a good standard build is to go fire nuker. max out fire, then energy storage. all you should carry are fire spells...

I believe, Shorty, that you are a nec primary? the standard builds there focus on death magic or curses. death would focus on raising minions efficiently, basically giving you a perpetual mini army. these are very popular in groups.
another popular nec build is a spiteful spirit (elite skill) curse build. It will take you some time before you can cap this skill, and Anet weakened its effectiveness several months ago (coincide with NF release) by updating the enemy AI. it's still useful however, and pretty fun when you get the hang of it.

As for the armor...you can always get runs to Droknar's forge pretty early in the game, by paying for one at Beacon's Perch (end of the 1st Shiverpeaks area that you reach) The run has become tougher, as Anet nerfed it b/c of its popularity. It's also an easy place to be scammed, so best to get there normally, like Zado said.

Gold isn't much of an issue with me...feel free to PM me if you need help, advice...a generous loan... :)

I am an elementalist primary, I havent even been near Droknars Forge, and what the hell is prophesies? Is that an add-on?
If I have to pay for it, I dont want it.

Thanks for the tip about the pets. I forgot I had been on GW so long. If I had known about the B-day presents I would have made four characters right at the beginning. I just realized I made my W/R in May of 2005. Do I get even better stuff with later birthdays?

Prophecies is the name of the original Guild Wars (expansions are Factions, Nightfall)
So, you already have it! It's still my favorite, because leveling is more balanced and it has the skill quests. It's too easy to level in Factions and money is quite easy.

As for your B-day present: I suggest trying to sell it in LA. Mini pets have become popular again. Depending on what it is (is it purple.gold/ or gree?), could fetch a lot of cash. People pay 100k+ for the Kuunavang (dragon) pet. I think every B-day present is a minipet. My first character was ~April 2005, so I haven't gotten one yet.

I tried selling it for 1 thousand gold and people just laughed at me.

What do you mean sell it in LA?
If you're talking about going on eBay or something forget it. I dont love the game that much.

I forgot what mini-pet I had two of (one from a Wintersday gift and another on a buddy's old character), but it was some little puprle thing. I don't get WTF it did so I asked one day in a game and someone was like "they are sweet, they just kinda fly around and follow you". WOW, AMAZING!

So when someone had a WTB for any mini-pet for IIRC 2,000 gold, I messaged that DUDE asap and got rid of it! Hmm, do I want another useless minipet or 2k gold? So things like that as well as getting lucky and finding the right dyes helps with getting enough gold to craft the best armors. Salvage just about everything you find that's not of much gold value and keep it in your stash. Once you get far enough, you can upgrade your stash for 50g so that all materials are held separately and don't take up room in your stash.

HaHa, no...LA = Lion's Arch. it's the major town in Kryta where everyone goes to sell their sh1t. D1 particularly....

which mini pet is it? Just about all of them can go for at least 1k...I don't sell minipets, so I'm not too familiar with the prices.

You'll always find people laughing at the price you offer. There's always someone else out there willing to pay 2x as much as you ask...I don't have enough patience to sell, so I usually give up after ~10 minutes of spamming. Some peopel that I've known on there do nothing but sell. You can go to one town, talk someone down to ~3k for a particularly desirable weapon skin, then sell it to someone else for 3x what you paid for it.

yep, minipets are useleless, as they just take up space. HOwever, I certainly don't mind if someone is willing to pay 20k plus for one of the ones that I've finagled...Anet recently updated to allow you to use minipets in towns and outposts. So, the value of almost all of them seems to have doubled over the last week or so...

Truely, such a great game, exceptional graphics, the best pvp system ever in a MMO, and it doesn't cost a dime a month. Too bad after my rank 12 guild died I was too depressed to keep playing...

I'm still frustrated as all get out. I can't seem to to jack sh!t in this game. I gave up on my stupid level 8 archer who can't deal more than 8 damage and takes 20 shots to kill a level 4 hulking elemental. wtf?? My level 3 henchmen deal 10x my damage. Rangers can suck it.

So then I tried to do a warrior build. Very first task, I had to kill those Skales by the river. That was OK. then after that some dude sent me to another place to kill some more, and they kicked my butt so fast it wasn't even funny. What the hell am I doing wrong? I hate, and I mean HATE, playing in groups with live players, and the reviews I read on this game have all said this was a viable single-player game which gave a refreshing new face to MMORPGs. But I don't find this refreshing and it seems as equally unviable as single player WoW. Is there only one effective way to play this game? What is it?

I also found it pretty hard to deal damage. My first two characters (one was N/Me, don't remember the other) only got to level 6 or 7 and they sucked hard!!

So I read W/Mo is a fairly newbie build, and I've certainly had a much easier time with the warrior. You do have to play in groups a lot unless your character is really good. I don't have a problem with it for the most part. Especially doing missions. They are often long and sometimes hard, but you can always find a good group for missions with experienced and/or high level guys who help out and also do the bonus with you.

As my third character in, either the W/Mo is just a better build for dealing damage and staying alive, or I've learned a lot more. I checked out the GW Wiki and FAQs to ensure I got all possible skills, bonuses, crafts, etc with this character. I also stuck around pre-searing Ascalon until level 7 or so. But I admit that a buddy's level 20 character on my account helped me since I got a ton of gold and materials so that I could craft a good sword from far into the game and use it on my own char (crafting weapons doesn't make them specific to a character but armor does). Also with the gold and materials I was able to craft the whole set of the better of the 2 or 3 armors (Ascalon armor) as soon as I got into post-searing Ascalon. It is still one of the better armors available out in Yak's Bend now at level 11.

Damn.. I need to find time for this game! Less AT, homework done quicker, and I would!

Well, you simply aren't going to be able to go solo with a ranger build--there's just no way. While you can get a pet that might help, you still are a kind of support character. A warrior / monk can be self-sufficient, especially later on with some of the upper level skills that you can use.

I despise going out with groups (unless of course I'm going out with my wife), but sometimes you don't have a choice. After the Searing, you can use henchman, or in Nightfall, you'll have Heroes. But sometimes you have to grin and bear it, and group with real people. Some will be assholes, others you'll actually make soft-of friends with. Me and my wife would be more than willing to help you out, but the fact that you are in pre-Searing makes it unable to do so. Talk to people, find someone you can stand, and go out with them for practice.

I'd suggest an ele / mesmer build to start with, just to get the hand of things. The initial mesmer skills are devastating to n00b monsters, and the ele is one of the best damage delaers in the game. After you can get a hold on the game better, delete that character (or save for later), and try another build again.

you have to be patient wiht those builds early on. they don't become completely useful until later levels, better skills are available. Warriors aren't so much meant to deal large amounts of damage as they are meant to survive. They're best used as meat shields, and very important for this with certain groups. W/Mo, W/R are good tank builds.

If you want to start doing serious damage at an early level, then the best class is elementalist. They do the most damage of any char, and do it very well.

Add me as a pal and I can help anyone out. We're also looking for new guild members...

You can't solo the entire game. By single player, it means there are AI controlled henchmen that you can take rather than partying with human players. You can beat any of the 3 campaigns with just henchmen. If you get Nightfall, you get heroes, which are henchmen, but you can customize their weapons, runes and skill, which makes them far more effective than a standard henchman.

Rangers don't do a lot of raw damage on their own, but they do have interupts which are useful. It's also easy to apply conditions with rangers. Apply poison makes every arrow you shoot poison the enemy. So they do moderate damage and have a lot of utility for other things. That's their selling point. Still, if you're not doing much damage, make sure you actually have points in Marksmanship. Each point in that increases your damage with bows and bow skills. Secondly, get a better bow. The max damage for any bow is 15-28. I'm sure you can find someone giving away a max damage bow. Expensive weapons in this game are about skins first, mods second and attribute requirement 3rd. So, an unmodded max damage bow would be a huge upgrade over whatever bow you are likely using right now, but it would be almost worthless and therefore given away. Just go to Ascalon district 1 and ask "WTB any unmodded max damage bow for 100g-300g". Should get a couple takers. Heck, lots of veterans are there just giving away cheap green bows.
