Hi everyone. I'm starting an unofficial thread for the upcomming MMORPG GUILD WARS.
THE LINKIE: http://www.guildwars.com/

I just want to say I'm very excited about this game. The concept sounds exciting the graphics look good and the biggest draw is that there are no subscription fees.

I'm so sick of paying monthy fees I've dropped out of MMORPG all together. (used to play SWG, My name was Sejong Lee, on Kuari Server any old timers out there?)

Anyone else know anything about this game please share news and information as they come.

I played during the Beta event back in the fall of last year. It wasn't bad, but felt like Diablo II with more eye candy.

When's the release date?

IT'S NOT AN MMORPG

I swear I see one more thread like this I'll call up Gaille myself so she can put it in huge letters on the website.

Don't worry, Malak is our local a$$hole. :)

Guildwars is not exactly like other MMORPG's such as EQ or WoW. The players in the game world can only join up in towns. You assemble your group in town and then go hunting with just your group. You will not see other players except those in your group while outside of the communities.

I am not, and it is not an MMO. I've even met the dev team myself, among others. It's a relatively empty genre, cooperative RPG. It is not massive in any fashion. It's the new age diablo.

You make it out like this forum has daily posts about Guild Wars. I did a search for "Guild" and the last topic even about GW was on 12/6/2004...two days after you joined. Damn, give the OP a break.

I wasn't referring to this forum exclusively. Every gaming forum from here to Stratics gets a thread identical to this one, and every time it's started right off calling it an MMO, even when it clearly says on the website it's not an MMO. I'm trying to stop the madness. Heck, no one even knows how it started or why. It's nuts.

By the way, the concept art for this game is probably the best I've ever seen.

No reason to go and do that. I can't see myself subscribing to an MMO anytime soon, I never feel the massive part to it. Heck I played Diablo and Diablo 2 for years and enjoyed it a lot, but haven't stuck to a single MMO yet. Just because GuildWars isn't an MMO doesn't mean it won't be hot.

coming from a strictly FPS and RTS background, i found guild wars way more appealing than other rpgs. you can explore and fight monsters if you like that, but the game is geared towards pvp and team combat.

Positives: awesome graphics, no monthly fee, combat that requires skill/strategy and teamwork to win(as opposed to who has the best items), and relatively small amounts of "farming".

the game plays out so that as you advance through the missions, your character gains enough experience to not have to go back and kill the same monsters over and over again before you can take on the enemies in the next mission.

Negatives: if you play 25+ hours a week, you WILL run out of quests and missions quickly.

but as pvp is more the focus of the game, that is expected, so if you don't enjoy team/clan/guild combat, then get WoW

For reference, my limited rpg experience includes Zelda games(which i love) and Knights of the Old Republic(which I hated), both of which my overall enjoyment was based on the fighting style.

PVP-focused games will always be more liked by FPS/RTS fans I think. I guess that's why I like them.

know of any other good action rpgs? i thought knights of the old republic would be good, but its just another "sit and watch your character fight" rpg. i can't stand that. i want more good games like escape velocity and freelancer that are free-form but quest-oriented and skill-based.

If you like Diablo I could suggest Sacred by Ascaron. It's got some neat new ideas. Aside from MMO's, I can't really think of any. I'm more of an FPS than RPG type of guy. I take pride in my skill in an FPS, I get bored trying to make a good character in an RPG... And I hate swinging a sword through someone's skull and it saying *MISS*... At least when my bullets hit their head they die. Heck in CS:S, I once killed 3 people with one bullet. That's a lot more satisfying :p

Guild Wars has some neat quests but the world feels empty. Everything outside of towns is instanced. Basically it would be like if you took Diablo2, upgraded the graphics engine, and turned the battle.net chat rooms into 3d towns.

I may get it, big MAY.

Guild Wars sounds cool. I didnt play the beta though... It sounds quite a bit like Diablo and a bit like Phantasy Star Online... I absolutely loved PSO for the DC and Cube (although lack of a keyboard killed my interest in it for Cube). Can anyone who played the beta make some comparisons between that and PSO? and if I'm completely off base, is there anything even close to PSO for the PC?

I miss Phantasy Star Online :(
