Besides characters and environment, how do these 2 games differ? Are they both the same type of game?

I have "finished" both games (save the new expansion pack for Guild Wars). The games are totally different.

WoW is more similar to EverQuest
[*]Persistent world zones for questing
[*]Dedicated servers for each "realm" to develop a strong community
[*]World PvP encounters
[*]Players quest in the world and will run into other people.
[*]Balance between PvE and PvP
[*]Crafting is better in WoW and the player economy is a bit more complicated. Players can pick trade skills and specialize in their crafting career.
[*]Game is on a massive scale, you could have 200+ people raiding cities or occupying provinces in the game (but that does not happen very often anymore now that the Honor system has Civilians).

Guild Wars is more similar to Diablo II
[*]Instanced questing areas (world is created around you and your group, you will never see another player outside of your group in the world for every zone is instanced, save outposts)
[*]Outposts serve as graphical chat rooms where you can find parties, it is the only place you will see other players that are not in your group (save the PvP arenas). You can also perform trade in these outposts and interact with various quest giving NPCs, banking, etc.
[*]Very PvP focused (you can start at max level and PvP all day)
[*]Crafting here is the use of "kits" to dismantle equipment you find in the world, take various parts to a certain NPC and have that NPC craft it for you.

Both are fun in their own ways, both have horrible communities; pick which one sounds the most appealing to you.

Is the PvP aspect the same as PvM in regards to instanced areas for Guild Wars?

I was assuming that PvP would take place in a larger scale static area

PvP occurs between two different factions in WoW, so you will never fight half of the player base on your server. you will see people of both factions in the static world questing area, and can pvp there, as opposed to Guild Wars. they call this World PvP, and it used to be the main area to fight until Battlegrounds came out last year, which is a set of instanced PvP zones, like Guild Wars, which have objectives (e.g. capture the flag), and are player-capped, but are still fun if you are competing with your own guild against another equally-geared one, but most of the time it's either a pickup game where everyone just runs off on their own, or one team is really organized and the other is not, so it's just a slaughter.

currently, the most fun pvp occurs on new servers if you level up at the pace of the rest of the server. but new servers are often abandoned by players who have other characters and often contain only 1 or 2 really organized guilds per faction, as opposed to 20 or more on an established server. However, older servers can be fairly PvE oriented, meaning unbalanced PvP, as those with amazing gear can join the same battle as people with crappy gear and take on two or three at the same time.

basically, don't get Warcraft if you only like PvP, because you'll be disappointed. however, if the only PvE you have experienced is in Guild Wars, then don't be too discouraged, because it's a lot more interesting in WoW.
