This isn't as good as WOW, but you don't have a monthly bill at least. I just got myself a copy. 🙂

UPDATE: This is the Game of the Year Edition with 2 licenses for Guild Wars and 14-day trial licenses for a bunch of other games like City of Heroes and Guild Wars expansions. I talked my wife into playing it using the 2nd license and we've been hooked ever since. We're both running Windows Vista. Great game!

Some of us would argue that point. I for one would never pay for a game, then PAY to PLAY the game I BOUGHT. In GW, skill is greater than grind. In WoW, grind is greater than skill because they want you to keep paying a monthly fee so it's in their interest to keep you grinding like a moron for "leet" loot / levels. I'd argue the graphics are a lot better in GW as well (not so cartoony).

Just start with the origional game - Prophesies. The expansions aren't that good and you get a lot of play out of the original game. Then you can decide later if you want an expansion. All the expansions do is add new storyline/missions and some new sucky classes that no one plays anyway. Then they add duplicate skills to what are found in the original game just to confuse things further.

yeah get the original first its the best....very long compared to the expansions which are way too short....guess they got to make their money somehow tho if not charging monthly...Nightfall is better than fractions in my opinion

Great game, I've been helping my son through the Ring of Fire missions, I haven't played for probably 6-7 months, and forgot how much fun it is when you have a good group to move through the areas.

$20 is a steal for this game IMO.

Also note that while the 3 games are stand-alone, the fourth and final Guildwars 1 game will be entitled Eye of the North - which will NOT be stand alone (but it will be cheaper as a result). As such, if you want to play the new expansion, you will need at least 1 of the other 3 games.

I agree the original game is the best (Prophecies), but Nightfall is quite strong as well (and Paragon&Dervish > Assassin&Ritualist).

I love my assassin, and while the Prophecies storyline is much longer, the Factions storyline is far more compelling. Plus I really liked the Asian flavor over the standard cookie cutter Eurocentric Prophecies style of play. There's only so many dwarves and centaurs and other *standard* fantasy fair you can kill without just getting bored with it.

/made it to Drok's on both my main Faction and main Proph characters

With many games, when a sequal comes out, every online player moves to that game and abandons the prior game. Everybody is recommending the first game. What kind of numbers of players are playing GW1 vs the two expansions?

I dont think it's valid to compare WoW with GW.

I find it really hard to know anyone in GW because like every group I join are pick ups and people just come and go as they wish. All characters look the same to me because everything is a shade of brown, which makes it nearly impossible to spot a friend in a group of ppl. They even have to split the lounge area into 10 different instances which makes it even harder to make any friends, let alone guilds.

GW is more like Diablo 2 than WoW, it's not a really an MMO.

GW Prophecies is a must have. Because of heroes, I'd say Nightfall is as well. BTW, Nightfall story I think is better, but is shorter than Prophecies.

Agreed that Prophecies is best with Nightfall following it even if just for the heros.

At $20 you can sure get your monies worth.

Oh and the banter about classes, all of them are cool they each offer different strengths and weaknesses, none can be said to be "better" than another across the board.

ritualist, yuck 😛

Actually, I just got another couple hooked on prophecies and have been playing it with them again. Best money I have ever spent on a game I think, right up there with HL2.

Good game. Lots of replay value by using a different class/different style or using different kinds of groups. Prophecies is all you need to get. If you enjoy it a lot, grab Nightfall because it is the better of the 2 expansions. If you end up getting those 2, you will probably end up getting Factions and might even like it. I didn't care for Factions though I took 2 or 3 characters through it.

I haven't played for a while, but I got a maxed (weapons/stats/skills) Ranger and War if anyone wants to run sometime.

I think the majority of people are still playing Prophesies. Everyone in my guild who got the expansions played them for a while then moved back to Prophesies. All of the Proph's areas are full. I own both expansions but consistently play Proph's and start new characters there.

I thought Factions was abominable. After playing Prophs, it bored me to tears. I had to force myself to finish it with one character and couldn't stand the thought of goingthrough with any others. However I have played Prophs beginning to end with 4 chars now. Still fun.

Speaking as someone who still plays the game regularly almost on daily basis, I would say the game's real strength and replayable lies in PvP. You can always mix and match any two classes and their skills making for some very interesting builds. Unlike WoW where your char strength is dependant on time spent and how 1337 your char equipments are, GW emphasizes more on teamwork, coordination and skills, especially in PvP.

They also run various event each week with perks and benefits on different aspects of the game. Eg. one week they might have double loot drop rate and maybe next week you get double faction pts for doing alliance battles etc. In fact, just this weekend it was double fame pts in hero's ascent. It was so packed the international districts spanned 7 instances.

Lastly, regarding the duplicate skills, it only applies to the factions chapter. There are no dup skills that does the same thing in nightfall however.

been playing this game for almost two years now and its awesome. any other gwer on here wanna meet up or need help?

i am on daily and wouldn't mind meeting some ATers.

Where do you see it is the GOTY edition? I would definitely get it if it does include 2 licenses. I've been looking for an online game to try with a friend of mine.

1 of my accounts is a GOTY and it didn't come with 2 licences. There is a 14 day/10 hour trial code with it but not 2 full licences.

If this is 2 accounts then it is a screaming deal...

Hmm, judgin by all the raves I shall try it. Even though I do not have much time on my hands to play I heard this one is more firendly for "casual" players ( I am not a casual player as media defines it today, but MMORPGs is something I never got into).
