from looking at pest patrols descripton, it does not look to be causing any of the symptoms you are expierancing, dont remove it or its startup entry, see if your issues go away by removing the other items.

I've done everything except deleting Folder Guard but like I said that's been on her for a couple of years, never a problem and it never showed up in spyware checks.

This stuff just comes right back every time. There has got to be some file changing its name or something - it just regenerates this malware. I can have the logfile clean and by the time I reboot several items are back. Likewise in Windows if I run Hijack This it'll clean the stuff and it's all back in a few minutes. Newest logfile:

Oh a couple more things I wanted to mention. Right now I see three instances of svchost.exe in Task Manager. With Process Explorer I can't make the non-MS ones die. I did delete the non-system svchost.exe file last time I was in safe mode but it's here running again.

Also run32.dll often brings my cpu usage up to 100% but I can usually kill it.

Should Spybot be going to 100% cpu usage also and taking forever when I'm deleting the items it found? And sometimes not doing anything when I click on fix? It almost seems like something is also thwarting all of the fixes I try. BHO Demon won't even work most of the time.

Hello Wolfchild,

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Disable system restore
3. Reboot into safe mode
4. Close all browsers/windows explorer

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)

  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = www.zestyfind.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = www.zestyfind.com/
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

additional steps

  • 1. Remove the following VIA instructions provided: Zesty Find Adware (manual removal instructions at bottom)
    2.Restart into normal windows

notes

  • Spybot sometimes takes quite a bit long to fix problems.

Thanks for your help :)

Here is my logfile below. I believe the main culprit was the Zesty Find/Look2Me trojan. Inserting a new host file prevented it from getting to the other sites that it propagates, and isolated it - it was the only thing that kept coming back after that.
Symantec's directions for removal did not work for me because the makers have changed the file(s) since those directions were posted. I found a VX2Finder(126) removal tool that seems like it worked (keeping my fingers crossed at this time).

good thinking about the host files, wolfchild, i will have to remember that if i encounter it.

use kill2me to end the look2me parasite.

the maker of bazooka has manual removal of zesty find here, not sure if it is updtodate.

adaware makes a vx2 cleaner plugin that was updated 3 days ago.

remove this stuff from hijackthis.

Hello kokanee and welcome to the forums:),

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Reboot into safe mode
3. Close all browsers/windows explorer

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)

  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cupdate] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX8.tmp\cupdate.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bcray] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX8.tmp\1010\bcray.exe

additional steps

  • 1. Clear your Temporary Files
    2. Remove the following VIA instructions provided: SDBOT.NM worm (if signs of infection are present)
    3. .Restart into normal windows

Notes

  • 1. If you want me to tell you what is not bad but could be safely removed from your startup to help with performance, just let me know. if you are going that route, do tell me if you use the extra keys on your keyboard (non standard keys) and if you use a winmodem.

Thanks for the quick reply and the help. I wasn't expecting it on my first post. Thanks!

I can delete whatever looks bad from the startup folder. I have 3 items in there.

I sometimes use non standard keys like 'back' fowward and a built in scroll wheel. ( I can stop if these cause problems, let me know).

I use an Ethernet ADSL modem, never heard of winmodem? I'm slightly new to the stuff. Go easy on the Noob

sorry it took so long to respond to this post, was at clan practice.

I reccomend removing the following via Start>run>MSconfig>startup

if you uncheck it there, you can recheck it later if you find that you have removed something that you needed. uncheck the following to free up resources:

[*]jusched.exe
[*]realsched.exe
[*]LTMSG.exe (make sure it is not deleted, just uncheck, chance it could cause internet not to work)
[*]ALCXMNTR.EXE (just identified this as spyware, collects info on systems for realtek, see this
[*]mmtask.exe
[*]msmsgs.exe

What should I fix? Does this find all problems btw? (I of course already did all the stuff in the guide before posting) How sure am I that my system hasn't been permanently recked and made easy to infect? After I remove all this junk I'll try and do all those preventitive measures. Thanks for any help :)

additional steps

1. Clear your Temporary Files

3. Remove the following VIA instructions provided: Instant Access Dialer
4. Delete the following files:
  • C:\PROGRA~1\OWNSNE~1\curb play.exe

5. Delete the following folders:

  • C:\WINDOWS\mslagent\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Free wait love part
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Open meal third ooze
  • C:\Program Files\SpyKiller
6. Restart into normal windows

Notes
1. Judging by the amount of BHO infections you had, i would highly reccomend switching to mozilla.

Hey all, I think I've found the right place to help me with my problem. Whenever I boot up, I get an "Error Starting Program" window that says:

A required .DLL file, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CRTDLL.DLL, was not found.

Then I get another little window that has Explorer as the title and the body says:

This program has performed an illeagal operation and will be shut down

If I close out the "illeagal operation" window. the computer freezes up and I have to reboot (which gives me the same things again). However, if I just leave the window alone, I can still use the computer for internet, email, etc. But, whenever I open up IE, it takes me away from my homepage and brings me to spotresults.com or some crap like that. I can get where I need to go eventually, I just need to hit the back button all the time. And then I also get allot of pop-ups as well.

I just bought this computer for my kids from my brother, so I'm kind of a novice at this. Thanks for any help I can get to fix this problem. I've also attached the hijackthis results:

Hello tm37,

Before you do anything
1. Disable system restore, malware can come back through it.
2. Reboot into safe mode.
3. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)
  • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - (no file)
  • O2 - BHO: LocalNRDObj Class - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - C:\WINNT\localNRD.dll
  • O2 - BHO: ohb - {4D568F0F-8AC9-40AB-88B7-415134C78777} - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\winb2s32.dll
  • O2 - BHO: NLS UrlCatcher Class - {AEECBFDA-12FA-4881-BDCE-8C3E1CE4B344} - C:\WINNT\System32\nvms.dll
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kieswwlwmhg] C:\WINNT\System32\nxhfqzzm.exe
  • O4 - Global Startup: Free WebSite Tools.lnk = C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\CoffeeCup Free FTP\ThirtyDayTimer.exe

Additional Steps

1. Delete the following file: "C:\WINNT\System32\nxhfqzzm.exe"
2.Restart into normal windows

hello smorrison and welcome to the forums. i will divide your solution into two parts. first i will try to help you with that operation error, 2nd, i will help you remove your hijacking.

Operation Error Correction

CRTDLL.DLL can be replaced by downloading it here and placing it in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\". You will need 7-zip to extract it.

that should fix your "Error Starting Program" issue. Resolve the missing dll issue before continuing.

Malware Removal

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Reboot into safe mode.
3. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)

Additional Steps

1. Clear your Temporary Files
2.Restart into normal windows

Notes

  • 1. The first two things i told you to remove will probably fix your hijacking problems, the rest are to help with internet explorer cleanup, might keep it from giving you so many error messages.
