don't confuse hippies with crazy homeless people. but yeah, there's some wackos in berkeley, and not all of them live on the streets. i almost find the yippies in their BMW's more offensive.

After I graduated from High School I moved to Hayward california and got a job in Oakland, we would always hang out at berkely on the weekends and I usually checked out amoeba 2-3 times during the week, anyways, I loved the feel of berkely at night, hippies playing guitar and selling stuff, lots of people with sleeping bags laid out on the streets, just having a grand ol' time. I went back here last year with my girlfriend to let her experience berkely and there weren't that many hippies (just one old lady trying to sell homemade hats for 80 dollars). There were only beggars (if they were hippies, they managed to hide their identity rather well) and those spray paint guys that make those pictures with spray paint and circles (I love those guys, I lived in argentina for 2 years and there were spray paint guys also, the great thing is, all the art looks pretty much the same, yet they are all done by different artists, I want to go to that school to learn the art of spraypaint) But I really missed how Berkely was, it seemed a lot different, even amoeba (but I blame that on the mp3 craze that all the kiddies are into nowadays). I miss the berekely of old, and the parking tickets I never paid.

There are actually a few hippies left here in SoCal. Guess what? The only difference between them and anyone else is some clothing, some hair, and a propensity to bong...

Do you think all the drugs the Hippies took is the reason their children (GenX) is so fscked up?

My Dad was a hippy. My Mom never did drugs while she was pregnant and my Dad never did any really hardcore drugs.

My Dad is still kind of a hippy. He's a musician (teaches music). I wouldn't want his life though. He's diabetic, doesn't take care of himself, has no retirement plan...I have no idea what he's going to do when he can't work any longer. Probably won't live that long anyway at the rate he's going. He lives in New York and I'm in California. I talk to him about once a year.

I turned out fine though. I have a good job, a house, a son, retirement plan and some decent money in savings.

Yeah, I have a lot of respect for someone who does drugs and wastes their life away in the pursuit of hedonistic pleasures. :disgust:

Bingo, Red, just look at Jules here. Oh sure, he has everything materially, plus the anger and sorrow that his Dad doesn't have a retirement plan.

You see, these are the sons of hippies: JulesM.

The aimless and vapid drugged out GenX punks? Thier parents are all big Bush supporters.

And so it goes, you know. Kids rebel against what they know most intimately: their parents.

What I think is ridiculous is that all the guys begging on Telegraph have dogs. I mean, you have NO money for yourself for food. So what do you do? You go out and buy all leather clothing and then find a cute puppy. Fools

Man, every town in every state has a story about some "old, homeless guy who's actually a millionaire."

In my town, the local vagrant is a millionaire professor.

Riiiiight.

Fair enough, you've made yourself a life with which you're happy. You owe much of it to your Dad's example, though, more than you might care to admit. And you are angry with your Dad for his choices . . . probably a little sad, too.

And watch out, material security is ephemeral and ultimately illusionary. "The best laid plans of mice and men . . ."

This thread is saddening.

Yes, hippies are a great contribution to society. I hope my son grow up to be a hippy...NOT!!!

I don't give a rats a$$ if YOU want to be a hippy. Just don't expect any interest or concern about you or your lifestyle from me.

which would explain why you quoted him and posted in this thread....

btw homeless people, crazy people, and hippies arent the same thing. sure someone can be more than one, but one doesnt mean the other.

how can you hate hippies? free love, acceptance, non-judgemental, good trips.....who can hate that unless they have some serious issues. hippies hurt you how?

you're basing your definition of a hippy on an idealized 60's era flower wearing, tree hugging, peace-loving flowerchild. Those don't exist anymore.

if you've been around berkeley long enough, you would realize that homeless people, crazy people, and hippies are largely the same thing.

no bias. a hippy is a hippy. only one definition.

Actually, I owe much of it to my Mom and my Step Dad. They're the ones who raised us (although, I was a teen when my Mom married my Step Dad). Perhaps I am a little angry with my Dad. I don't know. I do know that I don't want to be in his shoes when I'm 65.
