ill i needed to do was restart,

and if anyone is interested i have a spread sheet doc. that has a bunch of tweaks you can do

i figured some one could put it on there server or somthing, maybe even that site Shaden posted

im also wondering if changeing my page file to 2 MB is a good idea, to force everything to run in RAM

i have 512MB of it, would that be enough? right now the page file is using 219 MB

Page file is virtual memory, or ram on your hard drive.. so if you made the page file larger, that's telling it to run more stuff on the hard drive and not on the physical memory(ram)

right now i have it at twice the size of my RAM (so 1024MB)

but another guy said that making it smaller would slow my computer down, cause the page file is used when RAM gets full, so then my thinking is: right now my computer is using about 220 MB on the page file (i looked under the task manager under performance and saw the PF usage meter) so by what he says my computer is using all 512 MB of RAM at idle AND the 220 or so in the PF, then i asked him about that and he said my computer wasn't using all the RAM... and now im just confused, lol

i remember reading a thread about page file configs on one of the foums here - give a look around and it should show up in 'current messages'

thanks, but do you recall if windows ONLY uses the page file if RAM is full or does windows ALWAYS use a page file?

Finally, the temptation is always great when you have a RAM packed machine to totally eliminate the page file. Don't do it. By design, some components in Windows XP require the presence of a page file, even if they never use it for its intended purpose. You'll likely receive out of memory type errors if you eliminate all page files. Feel free to set the page file to the required minimum (2MB) if you have sufficient RAM, secure in the knowledge that XP won't access the page file unless it's absolutely needed, but again - don't eliminate it totally.

thanks,

i have yet another idea... in the page file set up you can set the initial size and the maximum size, would making the initial size 2 MB be better? that way if windows ever DID need more than 2 MB it would be able to go over right?
