Everybody put their guesses here what they think will be in OS 4.

My guess is it'll be a software update that'll allow multi-tasking, like backgrounder allows from jailbroken phones. Hopefully it's just a software update, and they won't make it hardware dependent on the new iPhone release later this year.

I'd probably shell out $600 for a new iPhone... expensive habit. :D

Rule:

We'll up up with ~10 features that would be awesome.

We'll pare that list down to ~5 features that we really hope for because all 10 would be a bit much.

Apple will put 3 of those in, plus one other useless one.

Everyone will scream FAIL at the internet, yet go out and buy a new iPhone with OS 4 anyways.

I'm still rocking my 2007 first-gen, so I'm hoping it's a pretty big hardware/software update so I can justify an upgrade.

Newest iPhone will come out in July at the latest so the new OS should come out at the same time.

I just don't see it. The timing of the iPad and the time spent on 3.2 doesn't make sense. Why launch a new version of the OS 2 months (1 month from the WiFi + 3G) before you reveal a major upgrade at your developer conference?

I think we'll see iPOS 4.0 at WWDC and I think we'll get new iPhone hardware in July but I strongly believe that iPOS 4.0 is a 'Early Fall' window. It's just not ready and won't be by the time a 4.0 iPhone is released.

If it was ready, the iPad would have been delayed to March or April showing with iPhone 4.0 on it for a June/July release.

I say it every time but I really want wireless sync. I'd also like to see an iChat app added.

Wouldn't mind the latest and greatest but my contract still has a year and a half left on it and I don't feel like forking out $500+ for a new phone.

So sell your current phone, and use the cash for the new. I did it last year to get the 3GS, and hope to do the same for my next phone.

I could but I'm not going to get that much cash for a two year old outdated model. A brand new 3G retails for $99 with contract.

You underestimate the no contract market. My pal recently sold his original iPhone for $200, which he used to get a Nexus 1. You should be able to get at least that.

You're right. Never thought of it that way. I just checked the going rates on eBay and $200 seems to be pretty standard. Consider it... considered! ^_^

Still, it would have to be a big update. Wonder if they'll put the Apple A4 in the next iPhone.

-some sort of multitasking
-sbsettings clone (infinitely useful)
-ability to turn off screen rotation (one of the huge reasons why i jailbreak)
-change background wallpaper in homescreen (like the ipad)
-widgets would be nice, but i wouldnt know how they would work
-ability to see weather, news, stocks, sms, email, whatever on the homescreen (like element from teehan+lax - hopefully coming soon one day!)
-completely revised homescreen
-ability to sync contacts/photos/videos to/from facebook, flickr, mobileme
-wifi syncing
-ota updates (could be a bad thing though...randomly apple could push an update and it might brick your phone, also ruin jailbreaking)

probably forgetting more...
