Guess who just won... the Lottery!

Well, it finally happened. After buying a weekly IL lotto ticket, I finally won!

I know what your thinking. But, unfortunately, it's not worth $10,000,000. It's $5,000. Even so, that's a helluva lot of money for me.

For those moderators out there that are about to move this thread to Off Topic, please wait. There is a reason I put this in GH. I'm planning on spending about 1/2 on a new computer. However, I was wondering: what should I get? And so, here I am, asking this: What should I get?

Requirements:

  • CRT monitor. I have room to spare, and I prefer the sturdiness of a CRT's screen agains projectiles. Don't ask why.

Many, many case fans. My computer is to me what a car is to others. Case Fans's are like hood scoops.

A really sturdy case. Something that has some weight. Something that will withstand atleast a tennis ball hitting it. Definetally a full tower atleast.
Do not need/want:

  • Quietness. I already have really good noise cancelling headphones + a subwoofer, so I can't hear anything else anyway.

    Space-saving anything. I got room.

Power savings. Come on. an extra $5 a month just doesn't really set me off.

That's it.

Well I'd say save your money for hearing aids, ear doctors......excessive noise, un-needed fans=pain. Maybe not right now, but down the road, bank on it.

You might have won the lottery, but I won a trip to BFG's HQ to play games, eat pizza, and tell them how to sell video cards 😛🙂.

side question: do they charge taxes on that or can you consider it a gift of less that $10k? if they do, congrats on winning $2500!

Congrats! $5000 is a nice chunk of change. If I were you I'd splurge and buy a plasma screen to hang on your wall. 🙂

California lottery jackpot minimum is $7 million but the odds are crap, like 1 in 40 million.

Lottery winnings are federal taxable income and are probably taxed as income by your state as well. So there is how you will be spending ~$1,500.

From your description I would say get a steel server case. I think the Enermax FS2000BB has about 12 fans.

That's an awesome feeling winning the lottery, I know I felt it to im 1988 when I won $45,000 in the Wisconsin lottery.
Spend it wisely, you lucky Dog.
Congratulations

Personally, I don't think extra fans look cool. Extra fans are just loud clutter. Most people go for stuff like window cases with lights and stuff.

Never really thaught about that... and nobody I personally know has it. Of course, there's got to be a 1st for everything. What would you suggest?

BTW: It is taxable under state law of 3%, however the idea of a %50 federal tax is not there. For prizes > $5000 there is a %25 tax. Luckily, I won exactly $5000, not more than. BTW, if anybody cares my numbers were 8-0-2-8... saw a lot of 8-0-x-x numbers so I figured, why not?

Also, unless SBC suddenly fails miserably (IMO it's a bit large for that, and as far as I know, there are no financial schemes up in the cowboys' coffers) I should continue to have a steady job. Also, the amount I'm saving is $4850 - the cost of the new computer.

EDIT: Thanks for the congrats guys.

With regards to water cooling, does it matter what I use as a resovor(SP)? I have an old 55 gallon drum that came with the condo (It was in the closet- don't people ever check to see if they're leaving anythinng behind?) that might work... I assume the bigger the tank the better? Dunno, never done water cooling.

I'd go with a quality Antec case... they're VERY sturdy, and they make some of the best power supplies.
I'd get a nice big monitor, like a 21 inch so you could comfortable watch a DVD or divx movie on it if you felt like it.
With all that money, you may as well grab an Athlon-64 too 😀 Although you might want to wait and see what that new Sis chipset is like when it's released to the public... AnandTech's engineering sample looked pretty impressive.

But they also have smaller awards. Getting the Super number and one other number right is worth something like $3. He didn't win the jackpot in the IL lottery, he won one of the smaller awards.

There is no 25% tax. It is a 25% withholding which requires a W2-G to be filed for credit. The winnings are taxed as federal taxable income.

Well, if you wanted to stick with air cooling and you don't mind some noise (I'm assuming it's a little noisy), then you might want to take a look at this shiny-flashy-pimp daddy-whoa!!-that's-alot-of-fans-case.
Wow. I like the thickness of it (2mm is pretty thick IMO). Even for $350, that is pretty nice... Not to mention all the fans... *drools*

$800 for a case?! Wow... um... no.

I want to get a decent computer for a decent price. looking at those, I see some pretty bad prices... also I only want to spend about $2500 at most...

On watercooling:
How much better than air is it? Is it worth the money? Any suggestions on a specific watercooling model/kit?

On CPU/Motherboards:
What MB would you suggest with an A64-FX?
