Question for all the music ringtone people. How often do you change it ? Don't you people get sick of it after like 10 rings ?

I've gotten used to mine. when a generic cellphone ring goes off I know it's not mine.

Well hope it didn't affect your chances. It shows a big lack of organisation or forgetfulness that they may not look too kindly on...

haha, nice job man.

i walked into a glass wall once at a restaurant while on an interview. they laughed and things went well til i did it again on the way out. nobody was laughing then.

I changed my mate's phone to classy one I conjured up when drunk. It was basially me singing "If you're a wanker, pick up your phone!". He had it go off in an interview.

Lesson learnt: don't be an idiot and leave your phone on during an interview.

I don't understand the big "TABOO" about phones going off in an interview. I mean, say your family member from another state comes to visit and you're having a serious conversation in your living room, and your house phone goes off. Do they look at you all taboo and go "OMG YOU SHOULD'VE TURNED YOUR PHONE OFF!!!111one!!1!"

No. It's a phone. It's supposed to ring. The point is to ignore it if it happens to go off. I know that turning cell phones off is an easy task, but honestly tinkering with your phone is about the LAST thing on your mind when you're about to interview for a job position.

professional environment (especially during a critical time, especially for your career) != non-professional environment.

It's a completely different feeling. You're always on your best bahavior in work environments, unless your boss doesn't give @ sh!t. When I was in an actual office, I usually didn't do personal calls much and if I did, it was with a very low voice.

Doesn't matter. The bottom line is a HUGE majority of people in America that would be applying for any position have a cell phone, including the interviewer. I completely agree that we should TRY to put it on silence, but for heavens sake we're all human and we have so much running through our head when we're about to go into an interview that it is easy to forget, and shouldn't be regarding as "unprofessional". It should be a simple accident, like sneezing while you're in the middle of an answer or something.

I'll agree, but only if you can turn the ringer off within a few seconds. It wasn't the case with the OP. Can you imagine being the interviewer and your potential new employee is fumbling around trying to stop an embarrassing song with embarrassing lyrics from playing ? It's comical, but also makes for an awkward situation between you and people who are judging you.

It shouldn't be awkward. I'll admit, through societal conditioning I would initially think down upon the interviewee, but I'd try to regain my thoughts and understand how bad HE must feel, and that the person on the other end of the phone has absolutely NOTHING to do with his ability to perform in my company.

Did you consider the type of ringtone he used ? If I were an old fogey top executive or anyone making serious business decisions... I don't know about hiring someone who would use that as a ringtone if I had a choice of better or even equally qualified candidates. It speaks about his personality - something that is also being questioned while interviewing. Don't give them anymore ammo than you would like. Don't divulge any information that's not pertinent. That's why again - best bahavior... no mistakes.
