I find it nearly impossible to believe there were that many coins in that cup.

Yup, I did a little math with the rough volume of a quarter and came up with 0.0273531774 ounces liquid measure per quarter which translates to 1 cup holding approximately 292 quarters. The picture is deceiving (fore shortened) but, I don't think it holds more than 16 oz. So, it would seem to be barely possible.
