I know it's appealing (sort of) to talk about heavily armed soldiers mowing down illegal immigrants, but given the tensions being cause in the US by the immigration debate, that seems like about the last thing you'd want to do. I agree that placing unarmed soldiers on the border seems like a bad idea for a number of reasons, but I'm not sure the ideal solution is to bring out the helicopter gunships. For all the rhetoric, this ISN'T an "invasion", dealing with it as if it were seems like it would cause more problems than it would solve. And as much as conservatives may disdain people getting their panties in a wad over situations where force is used, it IS a real problem that could have real consequences.
I think a far more reasonable solution is to make Mexico do their part, or at least stop helping illegal immigrants. We have a pretty big stick in the form of trade agreements when it comes to dealing with Mexico, I'm not sure why we're so reluctant to use it. Sure, it doesn't have the visceral appeal of mowing down the "invaders", but it seems like a hell of a lot more reasonable solution.
