I know it's appealing (sort of) to talk about heavily armed soldiers mowing down illegal immigrants, but given the tensions being cause in the US by the immigration debate, that seems like about the last thing you'd want to do. I agree that placing unarmed soldiers on the border seems like a bad idea for a number of reasons, but I'm not sure the ideal solution is to bring out the helicopter gunships. For all the rhetoric, this ISN'T an "invasion", dealing with it as if it were seems like it would cause more problems than it would solve. And as much as conservatives may disdain people getting their panties in a wad over situations where force is used, it IS a real problem that could have real consequences.

I think a far more reasonable solution is to make Mexico do their part, or at least stop helping illegal immigrants. We have a pretty big stick in the form of trade agreements when it comes to dealing with Mexico, I'm not sure why we're so reluctant to use it. Sure, it doesn't have the visceral appeal of mowing down the "invaders", but it seems like a hell of a lot more reasonable solution.

If the border guards (National Guard) can not even shoot armed men that attack them, then we may as well get rid of all the border patrol right now and surrender to Mexico.

We're giving them free health care and social security instead.

I agree...until they are fired upon, in which case they should be able to shoot to kill.

The U.S. government needs to declare armed illegal immigrants agents of Mexico and claim it an act of war if one crosses the border. These illegals' actions are sanctioned by the Mexican government both by oral declaration and by their own constitution. Line up 100 tanks along the border and inform Mexico of our intentions if the illegal situation continues. Let's see Mexican officials change their tune when they are under threat of the American Might. As far as I am concerned, these illegals pose a far greater threat against America than the "terrorists" ever could. They are undermining our economy--which affects many more people than were brutally murdered during the September 11th attacks.

how are the undermining out economy? or is that just more baseless rhetoric?

why didn't the guardsmen fire back? retreating inside your own borders is retarded.

Look at what happened to the two border patrols who shot a guy, who was carrying hundreds of pounds of drugs, on the side of his butt while chasing him...... The government made an example of both of them. They are now going to Jail for over 10 years. The drug runner.... Well, he will not be prosecuted and we, the tax payers will be paying for his medical bills.

link please.

That story never received the coverage that it should have. Some f'n filthy liberal judge decided to side with the drug-runner! I have several friends working as BP officers throughout TX, NM, and AZ, and they all told me that the judgment against those troopers sent shockwaves through the rest of the force. Many Agents left the BP since that horrible decision, and many more are considering other options as we speak...

It's actually pretty sad and just a bit scary that the foreign drug-runners have more rights than our BP officers and National Guard soldiers.

how do you know for certain that it as a liberal?

Like I said, I have several friends who are BP officers so I followed the case very closely. It was actually a federal jury who found them guilty; but the judge, U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen Cardone, allowed several motions throughout the trial that were ridiculous. The victim was given full immunity for the 700+ pounds of Marijuana that was found in his van for testimony against the two agents who shot him in the arse.

The entire case was ridiculous and I sincerely hope that President Bush grants their requested pardon. After all, he appointed the Judge himself in 2003, so he needs to make up for that silly mistake!

BTW, my former BN, just retired, is going down there. From the info they and I have gotten. No one carries guns. There are QRF, Quick Reaction Forces, that are armed though, but they could be up to 2 hours away. Of course, a few more incidents like this and everyone will be armed.

that's my point too. i have fairly leinent views on immigration, but if someone is shooting at a soldier, he should be allowed to defend himself.
