Similar thing happens with Hitman and happened with Ashes of Singularity. Thankfully the performance impact is not that big.
I'd like to see this visual test repeated with a 980 and 980ti.Not enough VRAM for high quality textures, perhaps?
The card does actually run the highest quality textures, but the AMD driver seems to be more aggressive at sreaming in these textures at the start whereas Nvidias driver prefers to load the textures on demand (at least for GPUs with 4GB or less vram?).
I prefer the former, I don't like texture pop-in. Also, nothing that can't be changed via driver update.

It happens on the 970 @1080 so are you saying 3.5+0.5 is not good enough for 1080p? Much more likely that this is a driver issue. Hopefully someone will test an AMD card with 4gigs or even 3 to compare.No. It's just loading or decompressing them in more slowly for some reason. Could be influenced by a number of things. The first thing I would consider is the massive difference in VRAM between these two cards.

It definitely could, if the texture load and decompression is creating a bottleneck and are being bypassed so as not to delay the frame then yes there is a gain in FPS at the expense of visual quality.
